I'd challenge most people on here to name the location of their nearest (or any nearby) phone box.
I'd then ask then when was the last time they used it.
I'd be amazed if more than 10% have a clear idea of where their nearest phone box is, and if 10% of those have used a phone box within the last three months.
If carding in the unused, nonexistent, phone boxes is a problem for a significant number of people in SE1, then they're living in a different SE1 to me.
Well you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm guessing you didn't attend the meeting at which this issue was identified as an issue of local priority.
It's interesting that you speak of a need to 'resist' community concerns.
Personally I do believe that the little things matter, litter, graffiti all contribute to a perception of disorder within a community.
All in all I do wonder what people are actually getting their knickers in a twist about an operation that probably didnt involve much resource anyway...
Precisely what crimes do you imagine where ignored as a result of the Police responding to this local concern?

No, I didn't attend the meeting, and yes I would rather that public bodies resisted crackpot suggestions like this.
I would rather the police were dealing with, say, the two break ins which have happened within 20 yds of my flat within the last fortnight than putting undercover surveillance on a phone box.
If this makes me unreasonable, I am happy to be unreasonable.

...if you press it, they will come.

It's important to be happy... It's terrible that they're obviously not investigating the break in's near your flat... I guess that's the point you're trying to make?
Out of interest how do you know that the police are not investigating your 'real' crimes because of 'crackpot' suggestions?

Johnny, thanks for patronising.
I think I've made my point, and feel no compulsion to go through it again. With or without spurious use of inverted commas.

1. Everyone I know in NJ, where my family lives, and NYC, which I frequent, accepts the link between low-level crime like broken windows, graffiti, hooker ads etc with more serious crime. Moreover it's common sense. I've seen no refutation in this thread.
2. Even if there were no link, it's important to me that my children aren't subjected to public porno. Don't bother to argue that the pornification of society is widespread. So what?
3. The police waste time on bureaucracy and pc policing. Let that be saved before worrying about whether clamping down on prostitute ads in phone boxes detracts from catching burglars.
4. I emphatically agree that burglary is a vile crime with terrible effects and that the police and courts are derelict in that respect.
