I think the bus services are integrated with the tube very well at Elephant. Lots of bus stops right by the exits from the tube stations. How could it be improved?

I was more thinking bus to bus transfer or even getting on a bus.

Even though we have two tube lines I somehow think of the elephant as a bus place especially to get into the west end on weekends.

For example I could take a nr. 1 bus to Totteham Court Road or a 12/ 453 to Trafalgar Square / Picadilly Circus or a 176 to Cambridge Circus to go to Soho for example.
As busses stop at completely different stops I have to decide which line I use before I set off. If it was centralised I could take whatever nr arrives first. The thought however of a centralised exchange stop I do find rather scary too given how many people change busses at the elephant - it could all turn into a bit of a stampede.
But don't get me wrong, I think busses work actually just fine here - so maybe best not to tamper with it.

Getting a bus to or from the West End used to be a joy, now it's like war. Anyone else share this feeling?

The comparison was Vauxhall, but there are better examples of interchanges at Canada Water, Stratford, Hammersmith - the newcastle metro used to excel at it before deregulation too.

The optimum layout would, I would guess, involve a new tube station layout with a concorse under the road with buses stopping either side of the main elephant and castle section. You'd be able to ext the station directly to a north or southbound bus as per your preference, change buses more easily and maker better use of the mainline interchange.

I can but dream.
