Does anyone know why Waterloo bridge was shut last night?

I had a magical mystery bus ride home from Holborn via Arundel St, eastbound on the Embankment, over Blackfriars bridge, down Blackfriars Rd. and all the way to the Elephant.
I rather enjoyed it as a change to routine but many people who wanted Waterloo were left very bemused (and some angry).

The bridge was closed due to a serious road traffic accident in which the Air Ambulance was called to land.
