Just had very sad email from friends of southwark park to say the gorgeous dr salter statue down by the river In rothehithe has been stolen. There is a 2000k reward for information lead g to the arrest of those involved. Call crime stoppers if you have info and spread the word. It not only honoured salter but his young daughter who died prematurely. 0800 555 111

Very sad to hear this statue has been stolen - he was a very well respected and loved figure in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe as was his wife Ada. My Nan and great Nan were patients of his.

Sad indeed, at least the council have taken his daughter and her cat into safe keeping.

Lets hope scrap metal dealers everywhere get sent e-mails about this. what a shame that not every one was aware of his care and love for Southwark, even to the extent of sending his daughter to the local school, working on the premise if it was good enough for the chldren of southwark it was good enough for his daughter. Not like politicians of to-day!

We've had copper piping (a lot of it take over more than one night) stolen from our development too in the last couple of weeks so it looks like the metal thieves are certainly around.

I wish the government would clamp down on the scrap metal business. Allowing folks to simply turn up with scrap metal, no questions asked, is what drives this crime.

Sadly Jan I doubt any Scrap metal dealers have a computer let alone an email address. Sadly the statue will have been crudely melted down or cut up and long gone on it's way to China. It's a sad state of affairs in Broken Britain these days that statues to the great and good and war memorials are stolen for a few quid.

Surely other (European) countries must face similar problems with those currently high prizes for metal.

Does anybody know how they are protecting their sculptures, plagues and train cables? Or if they have their scrap metal trade better organised?

Maybe we could learn from their solutions?

As you would guess - our laws surrounding this issue are antique.

The BBC had a short right up on this issue, the last 4 paragraphs are very interesting and will seed any further searches on Google. You can read the article here.
