Clue might be in the old name St Mary Newington Churchyard:

'Once a large churchyard, St Mary's Newington has been transformed under the Elephant and Castle regeneration scheme into park. Only the shell of a building remains from the church of the parish of St. Mary, Newington and not on the original site. Little is known about the mediaeval church which stood on the west side of Newington Butts."
