knife sharpening

remember when mum used to leave the knives out to be sharpened? well, i now have to take mine to brighton, which is the nearest service i know of.

anyone know somewhere closer?

We bought a little gadget from Lakeland and do them ourselves - not perfect but much easier than a trip to Brighton...

Try the shoe menders on Tower Bridge Road, I'm sure they do it

Its not SE1, but I take mine to The Japanese Knife Company in Bateman St Soho. Very reasonable prices and a while-you-wait service.
He even gives you a ripe tomato to check them on!

A few years ago, after I had spoken about how hard it is to get a proper edge from my knifes, I was given this tool as a birthday gift:



Since then all my kitchen knifes are razor sharp, and it takes no skill or time to hone the blades.

A much better gift than a tie or wallet...

i'll try this one first, keira - just for the free tomato!
i've always found the diy sharpeners problematical, but if the japanese aren't up to scratch ...
i don't think the tbr shoemenders does it, just keys.
