I must have read it wrong - I thought Dockhead Fire Station was getting a "refurb". I took the first pic 2 weeks ago thinking "that's some refurb". Took the second pic yesterday - more of a rebuild than a refurb!

What was given p/permission?

Or is this a case of 'whoops, sorry guv, I thought the bulldozer was in reverse, not fast forward into the wall'.

Yes, demolition has always been the plan since the PFI deal was first announced way back in 2006:

The principle of demolition and rebuild was approved by councillors (with serious reservations about the design) in 2009:

A new design was later prepared by different architects and approved in 2013:

Thanks James.

Oh dear, PFI. A gravy train for some of the private sector, a drain on public sector budgets (NHS anyone?) and, in many case it seems, very poor value for money.
