Renewed over a week ago, still no permit in the post. Visitors permits are now "virtual", so is the same true for residents?

I renewed last June and I no longer have a paper permit.

The title of this thread makes me wonder why some residents are made out of paper. And the post above makes me think that residents aren't real either :-)

What happens when it rains?

I still have paper book(s) of visitor permits. What are "virtual" visitor permits, please?

...if you press it, they will come.

Virtual permits are associated with your registration number, so when a warden does a check they can confirm on their systems that your vehicle has a valid permit without you needing to display anything on the dashboard.

Thanks, James. I understand how this works for a permanent permit, but not how it could work for visitor permits.

Instead of buying a book of 10 visitor permits, you now buy a book of 10 virtual permits. These act like credits so when you want to park a visitor, you log into your account, put the reg details of your visitors car and the date and time the parking is to take place and the car is "parked" - the credit reduces by one until you have no credits left and then you can buy more. The only drawback is that you can only use virtual credits one at a time, so you have to go through the process 4 times if you want to park the same visitors car for 4 days.

Got it, thanks, bmovie.

I think that you had to do the same (day by day) process with the paper permits, as it was technically an offence to show more than one permit at any one time (or, even if it wasn't an offence, you'd get a ticket).

I still have some paper permits left, so let's hope that's not a problem...

To conclude this thread, the old permit expired on Monday and for Tuesday and Wednesday the car sat without receiving a parking ticket on the street - clearly the virtual permit was working. Wednesday evening, a paper permit was found on the doormat. So it seems like they send them out, but you don't need to display them - odd.
