I go in there at lunchtime every now and then. It's not the greatest pub, but it's ok. There's lots of space, the beer's good, and it's cheap. The cheapness attracts some "interesting" people, as in most Wetherspoons pubs, but they aren't a problem. The only thing that's been a problem when I've been there is that they could do with a few more staff at busy times.
I was there last Wednesday and your description is spot on, including the "interesting people". Was packed as well, we couldn't find a seat.
