my new to me but very old fiesta needs an MOT/service. I find most garages quite frightening and feel that they can sense my fear and up the prices (I hope that does not offend anyone). Any recommendations for decent but cheap garage preferably in the bermondsey square end of SE1.

I use the chap at the southern end of Hercules Road (just north of Lambeth Road) who seems nice!

You're not the owner of that pale blue ancient Fiesta with barely any rust, are you? They're cars that have lasted phenomenally well.

no - mine is of a faded red grandeur - used to belong to a great aunt (rip)
will find out how well it is holding together following mot - chose the RW autos on morocco street as it is very close by

Good choice. Nice people and honest in my experience.

I'm interested that you can call a Fiesta of any age an 'old banger', a term which I reserve for cars of Morris era or before. How old does a Fiesta have to be to be called 'ancient'? Mine is 15 yrs old and I think of it as newish, whilst being aware that most people wouldn't.

to the LMJJ - i thought old banger was a generic term for any car older than about ten years. i went to rw autos and they were very nice but needed quite a lot doing and so ended up quite a lot of money but got a friend who knows about these things to check the bill and he said it was actually very good value. at one point i thought i had been charged 55 for a new light bulb and this confirmed all my fears about being an obvious 'pigeon' for car mechanics. then realised that i had misaligned the bill and had been charged 1.50. made me realise that a paranoid personality and poor attention to detail make for a bad combination. anyway i can recommend them and the main man was a definite hottie.

You could try Bermondsey Motors they are in SE16 but a Ford specialist.
I just put my old Ford Escort (1993)through its MOT and bill was 100 incuding the MOT.

They seem quite OK.
