I saw a trailer this evening for a programme on the history and design of postboxes - tomorrow night (Tuesday) on ITV1 London at 7.30pm

Made for the Masses
In episode two, the history behind the epitome of British design, the Post Box. In it's [sic] origins, the post box used to cause such a stir that crowds of people used to come and watch the postman emptying the boxes and taking away the post, how different to present attitudes to this design icon that we now take for granted as part of our landscape.

[What an appallingly badly written blurb!]

Oh - and I forgot to mention that the trailer features the post box by Falcon Point in Hopton Street...

This from yesterday's Guardian: Postboxes purloined

also in the Times...

We'd best find that Edward VIII box quick before someone pinches it to sell on eBay! :-(

is the box in Hopton street the one I'm looking for (the holy grail of post boxes)? I'll go and see it today.

I don't think so - I think it's a plain old Elizabeth II box (but I could be wrong)

James, lovely to see you at last. So where is the holy grail of postboxes?

Er - that's a still from the TV programme showing the Hopton Street box!

The guy in the picture is the presenter, Oliver King.

I am amazed that after all this time, all this interest in postboxes, and all the people who use this forum, we still have not identified the location of SE1's supposed rare post box. Who will put us out of our misery? Glory on the Forum is the prize for the successful poster.

Can James at least tell us whether the Ken Hatts drawing on the front cover of in-SE1 (issue 53 November 2002) was drawn "from life" in SE1 or from a photo?

There are no identifiable features in the background.
