Mason St. to be made one way - crazy!
mirageman Wednesday 6 February 2008 8.31pm
The problem is that if Mason St is made one way, all the traffic which use it to gain access to OKR - some 1800 vehicles/day according to the study - will have to find another way on to the OKR. Which will mean the already congested East street will become even more congested. Apparently this is OK because East St. is classed as a 'secondary distributor' road, whereas Mason st. is classed as 'residential'. The irony is that there are probably more residents living on the section of East street which will be impacted than there are on Mason St.
Madness! If you have objections to the proposal, make your voice heard by contacting Steve Jones at Mouchel, 020 7874 9125, stephen.m.jones@mouchel.com as mentioned above. The consultation period ends in mid-feb, so hurry up!

I must admit that i have wondered for a long time why traffic is allowed to pull out of Mason street at such a dangerous point close to the fly over-the amount of near misses i have seen with cars trying to pull accross to access the round about is very high. Perhaps the need for safety at this junction is why the change is proposed and a small amount of inconvience that saves injury or even death cannot be that bad.

If it was practical, I'd use a safer road than Mason Street (especially if I need to cross over onto Bricklayers), but as all the others around there are closed then it is the only option. From where I park my car, to go round the back and come out on Massinger Street then go up OKR to Mason Street is a half mile detour (around effectively single track roads because of all the parking) compared to going straight out on Mason Street.
Safety hasn't been put forward as a reason as far as I know.
I am also concerned about the accuracy of their survey - the figure of 1800 per day seems unlikely. It is likely that most of the cars go by in an 18 hour period, which is 100 an hour. I've never seen that kind of traffic volume, even between 8am-9am, which is when I leave for work and is when the traffic on OKR tends to be busiest.

Consultation report documents relating to this are now on the Southwark website
http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/transport/streetsforpeopleschemes/Salisbury.html
Not sure how long they have been there.
They are going to "investigate alternatives" to making Mason Street one way. Hopefully the final plan will be a sensible one!

I live in Mason St, and I will not miss that southwark council rubbish lorry that goes along Mason St most mornings at 6am and hits every speed hump, the noise wakes me up, if I can drive a car over the humps surely a lorry can.

We got a leaflet in the mail this week confirming that they are going ahead with making Mason Street one-way going south/west. It will be two way up until just past the school car park entrance - so the school/Charlotte Court/north car park for Darwin Street will be able to access New Kent Road, but everyone else will be taking a detour - presumably down to Massinger or East Street, neither of which need the extra traffic.
The rest of the final scheme is pretty good - the park area will expand across the roads and there are various lighting/street furniture improvements, plus some new trees. I think there was a web address for details, which I neglected to note down.

Sorry, double post, but this amused me - I was checking to see how much longer the journey becomes when coming home from the north roundabout at E&C (1 km, ouch) and the standard directions suggest going down the OKR to East Street and making a U-turn! Any delivery drivers relying on satnav are going to come unstuck...

I don't understand why Southwark is so keen to cut off these tiny streets, have you all been upsetting the roads people? Do you think that nice man who kept posting before still works for Southwark, I suppose it's been 5 years.
I would love Hatfields, where I live, to be one way, or otherwise difficult to access, why don't they come up here and start messing with our street, and let you all have some peace. Could you all write that when you return the consultation stuff!!!
