I agree about the negativty on this forum - like how all new homes should be affordable and how all shops should be small individual wned businesses and big chains are the enemy. It's just not the real world.

Another classic (sorry) is the "poll" on the site asking "What would you like to see built on the Potters Fields coach park site? ; Berkeley Homes' 8 cylindrical towers ; A cultural attraction (museum, gallery, theatre) ; Extend the Potters Fields park ; Leave it as it is is is.

It's a bit like asking my daughter whether she would like brocolli, cake, beetroot or chocolate for tea. The cake and chocolate are such soft answers that almost everyone chooses them.

Diversity is the key, and affordable housing is part of the mix, but if all people want is some sort of public housing only utopia, or more and more open space used by less and less people, we will end up with something like the current Elephant & Castle and surrounding estates again because it will all be poor quality, under resourced publically funded development.

Rant over!

(IMO) we really do not need another "cultural" site on the South Bank.

(Apart from London's parks) the riverside is one of the few places to take a stroll and get away from the traffic. For me, it's a destination in itself.

If we need another "cultural" development (sorry to persist with the greengrocer's quotes, but it's deliberate because I really don't think anyone knows what they mean when they use it in this context and I think that's half the problem), then why not put it somewhere where you need to encourage people to go?

Build the art gallery (or whatever it is people want) at the Elephant. If it's that good, then people will still come to visit (with all the attendant benefits for the local community and all the tourist £££££££££s). It may also mean that the Sth Bank becomes less full of people, thereby making a stroll a lot pleasanter than it already is.

...there's plenty more c**** in the cup.

I can breathe - loafer and RShaw I commend you for a little support (especially loafer). Something positive to say - not just jumping on the pro/against boats but considering wider implications and the longevity of the area...

Ivanhoe

Have read your posts on other topics and again commend the fact that a full consideration has been given to all topics - for some things and against others with solid reasoning underlying each... Refreshing - really.

Excellent point Ivanhoe. How about knocking down the Royal Festival Carbuncal (sorry "Hall") and rebuild it in the Elephant masterplan and use the site for mixed housing and offices...

The important issue here is that it seems 90 percent of the
users of this web site recognise the unexeptible nature of the
current Birkelys scheme ,and it must be rejected in it entirety.

I would support either the cultural attraction ot the park
extension .

Good for you. Good for them. Who cares? That is your opinion and fine, but not mine and never will be... "The ? nature of the ? scheme...???"

And I think the message is quite clear on your standing - park or culture right? Fine - really but not a viable option given the slightly bigger picture...

I would question just how many of the 90% you mention are directly affected by the scheme and again how many have actually looked at any plans or are just jumping on the bandwagon blind of any factual information...? How many units private and affordable? How much commercial space? How many jobs and homes created? Bring me reasoned argument and I will more than happily listen (but still not agree!!)

Exhausting.

...and I would support world peace and and end to hunger. Which are about as likely.

Make that two beers!! Genius. Perhaps we could use the site for touting tickets for a tour round Ken's office or perhaps a ghost tour of Bermondsey and Shad Thames? Maybe set up a stall for local artists to churn out another endless stream of Tower Bridge pictures to flog at Hays Galleria...? The scope is endless...
