My boyfriend and his flatmate are considering moving to Steedman Street, not far from the Elephant & Castle roundabout.

I have my concerns as a female who travels there quite a lot that there is;

A) a lot of young kids hanging around
B) a real lack of anything to do socially (other than a weatherspoons!!) that you can walk to.

Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences of living/socialising in this area.

Many thanks,

Thank you....these threads only seem to be existing residents comments though.

Is there anyone who left Elephant and Castle?

Also no mention of good bars/restaurants other than the ones on the roundabout...is it safe to venture too far from the roundabout on foot?

You'll find lots of discussion of restaurants down the Walworth Road and Old Kent Road scattered through various threads.

I lived in Elephant and Castle for 21 years. I've moved to Bermondsey and feel more threatened there walking the street. If I could move back I would!!!

lwright - the thing is with the internet that if you look hard enough you'll find whatever it is that you are looking for - be it good or bad experiences of Elephant.

Many of us who live around there will tell you that there's alot going on and that it is as safe as any other part of central London, just not as pretty as some!

A very good point about the internet.

Aside from the safety, its the local access to good social life as neither of us drive.

Are there gastropubs/nice bars in the area?

Not many immediately in the E&C area, the William on Harper Road would be the closest (in terms of closest thing to a gastropub I can think of - posh it isn't but the food at the Pacific used to be excellent). There are several good places within walking distance. Bermondsey Street is about a 15 min walk away at a guess.

You may want to check out the Restaurants and Bars section of the site - click on a business and it will show you what people have been saying about it on the forum.

Also, you were asking about restaurants ? Definitely check out La Bodeguita.
