Reply from Great Portland Estates to my e:mail about the car park:-

"We only found out about the car park operators yesterday morning ourselves - they were “opportunistic” squatters. We are dealing with the situation and I believe they should now have vacated - if not they should do so today".

Fast work from GPE. In a subsequent e:mail they said they're now looking at improving security at the site (which so far has been non-existent).

I see that work is resuming on this site tomorrow.

The plot thickens! We've had a newsletter advising us the building will start on 14th July for completion 2010. But ... Southwark Council's website suggests that the consultation period hasn't ended and that their application has, therefore, not been approved. Also, the newsletter refers to an 18 storey building - the application was for a 15 storey building! Very mysterious.

They have planning permission for the overall scheme - the pending applications are just for approval of details of elements of that main planning permission.

From today's GPE interim management statement released to the stock exchange:

Quote:
At 240 Blackfriars Road, SE1, we have completed the demolition phase and enabling works are ongoing. Held in a new 50:50 JV with BP, we expect to make a decision on the timing of construction works later this summer.

An unsurprising line from Great Portland Estates' half-year results:
"At our Blackfriars Road, SE1 site we have completed demolition and we expect
to defer committing to construction until a significant pre-let is secured."

Latest from the GPE full-year results:

"At our Blackfriars Road, SE1 site we have completed demolition and have deferred committing to construction until a significant pre-let is secured."

Also of note:

"In Southwark, although there is a low level of supply and a more diverse customer mix than the City, take-up levels this year have been affected by difficulties in neighbouring financial districts and rental values have also fallen."

It looks fantastic, really hope it gets built.
That section of BR is almost as depressing as the lower end...

Someone's trying to flog one of the street signs formerly affixed to the old buildings on this site on eBay for 100
