Simon, you've got it all wrong - even the nominations were made by Southwark residents. In the end 10,500 people voted - and just about all of them were from Southwark. Take a look at the full list at the link below. Some of these events, like the Druid Street
bombing and the Surrey docks fire were of very local significance, but there's nothing wrong with also being proud of people who had a global impact. The best part is that these plaques say "Voted by the People", rather than by toady old historians tucked up outside the borough. And you CAN always nominate people for next year.
