As someone who has been knocked down on a zebra crossing once and has had a couple of near-things (particularly by St. George's Circus and on the Cut) on them on other occassions I definitely prefer pelican crossings!

But I think technically the criteria for having a pelican crossing instead of a zebra crossing depends on factors such as the average speed of cars and the level of traffic etc.. Presumably the crossing was "upgraded" in response to changes in one or other of these factors. Sounds like they didnt do the best possible job in making the change though.
