Role of Shakespeare's Globe

I am a theatre student at Glasgow University in my final year and as part of my course, am (attempting!) to write a dissertation on Shakespeare's Globe theatre and the role it has in modern theatre and society.
As part of my study I am keen to gain a range of perspectives on the new Globe and thought this website might be a good way to try and gain a local viewpoint.
When Sam Wanamaker was battling to gain support for his project, the new Globe was described as "Elitist, touristic and irrelevant to local needs," [Holderness, 1988] and also disregarded as an "Elizabethan theme park."[Hawkes, 1992]
I would be thrilled to know what anyone thinks about these comments and what you see / enjoy as the benefits of the new Globe, or, alternatively, where your reservations lie about the project.
Thank you very much for your time, I look forward to hearing from anyone who has a few moments to come to my assistance!
