Apparently Southwark was far more interesting in Roman times than was ever suspected until recent digs started.

London was a very advanced city in that era and not the forgotten hole on the edge of the empire that was thought to be the case for many years.

The Gresham Road site next to the Guildhall and the Plantation House dig in Fenchurch Street provided fascinating new insights during the past two years. Some of it was broadcast on the tv programme Time Team.

Shame that most of Roman London is about 10 metres below the existing street level, so we will never really have a full picture of what it was really like.
