There is a pub on the corner of kender street/queens road that used to have great music..cant think of the name now..more se14 though...

No, but you are rarely going to see amateur performances of unknown works at the cinema or theatre are you? Looking at it from another way, it's like potential authors asking publishers to pay to read their manuscripts!
Back on topic, The Miller of Mansfield on Snowsfields certainly used to have a few free bands on every Saturday night.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. The publisher is more akin to the bar owner/promoter and the audience is the person buying the book. You pay into the cinema/theatre even though you haven't seen the play/movie. And if you're worried about not liking the band there's always myspace. Before I go to the Miller to see a band I always check out their myspace.

the bridge bar on the corner of tower bridge approach and queen elizabeth street has live music in their downstairs bar, I keep meaning to go but haven`t yet
