I must confess to finding the Potters Field saga exhausting in all its permeatations and a classic case book in everything that is wrong with local government and planning in London. Be that as it may some observations to move on the debate:

1. The threats from Ken (most publicly voiced at the Labour Party Confreence in 2007) continue to sicken me, as, whilst I appreciate he is concerned with housing numbers, is at the same time blinkered by the sheer bulk and scale of the proposals on this landmark site. And yes, I know the Planning Inspector thought it perfect in every way........!

2. The drift from Southwark is quite frankly, inexcusable. For my part the visitor attraction is clear for all to see - the neighbouring park. Just extend it! What a wonderful use of scarce vacant land in the centre of town - and think how enjoyable an extended Potters Field Park would be. The "world class attraction" can frankly wait - Southwark should just grass it, put up signs stating where public rights end in the existing park and permissive rights to roam start (retaining the development opportunity) and at least the land would be then be used and enjoyed - not least by Southwark's civil servants soon to move in across the road in Tooley Street!!!!

3. Southwark could start a public competition for ideas for the site - at least be seen to be doing something!

4. As for the neighbouring residents (of which I am but one) we must but try not to SCCCREEEAAAAM! It is frankly a farce. If it were Christmas it would be a pantomime with Berkeley Homes the ogre and Ken the dame.

I also think Val Shaw cross (Who says she dosent like the towers)
attitude is a typical politicians attitude.

I.e. its best to be seen to push ahead with something even if its wrong, than be seen to do nothing,

When the fact is there is no pressing reason to redevelop the site, in a rush.

the people of London don't wake up in the morning and think, oh my god there's a piece of land by the river with nothing on it ,quick build something.

We can wait for the best solution,

Rother that than wreck the whole area. World heritage site and all.

Also Ken Livingston is now behind in the polls for the Mayoral election.
So his authority is slipping away by the day.

Just found a free game to download from the internet - it's a mystery game where you try to discover the identity of Jack the Ripper - nice.

However, the game contains a rather interesting screenshot featuring Tower Bridge and some strange buildings...

Wait for the best solution?!?!

How many years, decades even has this site lain derelict & as far as Southwark are concerned they have come up with nothing for years. How much more time do you need.

The towers on the Berkely site are under construction so what will we be left with- A halfway house where 3 of these towers are built & Southwark still has a patch of wasteground.

Brilliant idea.

Indeed lambeth lad, you have a point. Shilly shallying council members have let this whole thing run away with itself. And persistence, as Iknow only too well, on the part of the developers, tends to win out. Alas the Council has not enough money to face legal actions the developers can throw at them, time after time. For the developers the legal costs are equivalent to the price of a cup of coffee.
