hi people...do u know whats happening at The Coronet. ?
It opened a few years ago with a fanfare of glory and i went to Primal Scream - great gig..but it seems to have been a bit of a disaster..and still looks really bad. i thought they were going to refurbish it?
I'd love to see it reopen as a Cinema.. these club events look very dodgy and i'm not sure they reflect well on the neightbourhood........ and theres a headline about 3 shootings today on this website.
if it's dangerous and shootings are happen, i think it should close and the council should reconsider a safer use... or it shoudl reopen as a cinema?.
Cheers
Richard

I was at the Primal Scream gig too - thought The Coronet was an excellent venue for gigs, similar to Koko in Camden. Shame nothing more has come of it...

According to its website it changed hands last November and is now owned by the same people as the Mermaid Theatre at Blackfriars.

No, I think its still continuing as a venue, have been to a couple of events there in the last year. Its an amazing space but totally under used! Unfortunately the hire costs are quite high which might dissuade people from using it.

I was at a free psy-trance party there about a month ago and have been to a number of trance parties there over the last couple of years. Nice venue, but could do with more seating on the 2nd floor and it can get bloody freezing inside in winter as there's no heating... It's a shame it's not used more often for events.

I saw CSS @ The Coronet before Christmas and really regretted surrendering my coat as the venue was freezing, with Security - all wearing nice warm florescent jackets - keeping the fire exits wide open all night. Adding insult to injury, the coat room was a disaster area at the end of the night and the queue at least 45 minutes long. Also, the place was absolutely filthy, its floor so tacky one stuck to it. It's a shame because the Coronet has great potential as a live venue with a bit of character, but the management is appalling.
(FYI: the site of the original Bill Haley seat slashing, Rock-Around-The-Clock riots was at the other Coronet, a more modern cinema which used to be directly opposite, across New Kent Road.)

i.e. the former Trocadero, demolished for the northern roundabout and Alexander Fleming House, rather than the replacement Odeon designed by Erno Goldfinger.

The wikipedia page for the Coronet is full of inaccuracies like the Bill Haley claim - it looks suspiciously as though it was substantially written by the PR people of one of the recent operators.

hey yeah i had a similar experience at the Coronet to Russell's one at teh CSS gig...i used to work backstage at Brixton Academy and heard from one of the riggers that the Coronet doesnt have heating, altho, apparently it should have had as part of the original refurbishment. i also heard that the original owner, dominic madden tried to sell it to the company who owned brixton but the sale never happened and the venue has never operated properly since. that's the back stage gossip that i heard anyway!
