Wouldn't it be better to stop using labels? After all, it's disrespectful name-calling. Which is something I keep hearing deplored in "feral kids" and "yobs".

Disagree.

"Feral kids" and "yobs" describe them exactly - I would not want them referred to as "children" or "youths" because that is disrespectful to respectable kids.
