Attempted phone theft

I was at the Cuban festival on Saturday, and a young lady dropped her phone, whilst looking at a stall, I picked it up, and interupted her whilst she was talking to friends to give her the phone back, and she seemed mortified, she looked really shocked and scared, said 'Oh my god! thanks', and looked away as quick as possible. It all seemed a bit dodgy, as though maybe it wasn't her phone. I certainly didn't feel like I'd done a good thing.
My original thought of just picking up the phone and walking off probably would have made me feel better about it.

I'd seen the scam on telly a few months ago, my friend was mortified.
This is standard practice in W1 coffee shops and bars...
...if you press it, they will come.
