Gyms in the area

The Bankside Health Club is great and at £50 a month works out cheaply for me. As I go to the gym 1-2 times a day 5 days a week. They also have some cheaper offers for off-peak hours etc. I have noticed recently that there are a lot of people from LSE using the gym so it must be popular with the students. The staff there are the friendliest I have ever encountered in a gym in London. There are lots of machines and weights and enough room for everyone, even during the busy hours.

As a local resident to SE1 you'll pay a little over half that price at the Colombo Centre, with no membership requirements.

I would certainly check out Soho Gyms in Empire Sq which you will be living near - they are flexible on memberships etc, and you will certainly be able to try the place out before committing to anything.I have been a very happy member there for 5 months now
They are known for their free weights areas and so far, since the gym opened in Feb, all has been going well. Gets busy Mon & Tues around 6pm but apart from that, fine.....
Lots of other gyms in the area though - but you should be in a good position to drive a bargain for rates as many are losing members right now...
