Just seen this flyer for the official "switch on" at 5pm on Friday December 12th

Going to the press release:

" A spectacular lighting scheme promises to brighten up the Elephant and Castle this Christmas and will continue to shine as the area's physical regeneration gets underway in 2004.

"E-light, designed by Equation Lighting Design and funded through the Elephant Links social regeneration programme, shopping centre owners, St Modwens and Transport for London, will adorn trees in the area with curtains of twinkling light to guide pedestrians round the Elephant's confusing network of walkways and underpasses.

"The second phase of the lighting scheme, which will be switched on early 2004, will shroud the 1960's concrete towers of Hannibal House and Draper House in rich shades of colour creating a striking and long lasting beacon at the heart of the Elephant and Castle."

Rather unfortunate that they had that switch on ceremony and only one set of the lights appears to work! Those lights do look rather nice, and I'm sure the whole thing will look great when they're all working. They must be quite behind, as there are still qutie a few poles amongst trees with no lights.

Yes, I came through at 6.30 on Friday and was very disappointed.
The weather wasn't great for the searchlights panning the night sky like a movie premiere either.

Still at least the Northern Line entrance is finally open, so there was something to celebrate.

Any thoughts on what impact the lighting has had on perceptions of safety etc?

I think that until Southwark get rid of the super-illuminated hoardings on the roundabouts - starting with the clumsily installed vertical ones - any lighting strategy is doomed to fail because all lighting appears relative to the brightest source.

Unfortunately, I suspect that Southwark or TfL earn a pretty penny from those adverts!
