I foolishly missed the show at the Menier last month...

... but I read about Tate to Tate the other day, and bought a copy of Tommy Penton's amazing illustrated book. It's a fantastic pageant of coppers, snoggers, commuters, kids, tourists, booksellers, strollers, joggers, skateboarders, pavement artists, con-artists, and all sorts of other folk, against a continuous drawing of the entire riverside from Vauxhall to Bankside. Some, you notice a few feet into the tapestry, keep recurring as they walk from west to east, and others are heading in the other direction. There are sly references to Roberto Calvi and Georgi Markov. Gilbert and George are marching under the Millennium Bridge. People are getting in the way of other people's photos by the London Eye. Ice creams are being spilt. A brilliant illustration, and a superb book!
