Simon Jenkins has an amusing (if somewhat hysterical) rant about this development and the Doon Street tower in today's Standard:

Official notice of public inquiry:

At least the venue is nice and local: the recent inquiries for Doon Street and Founder's Place were both held at Lambeth Town Hall.

Boris Johnson's U-turn on this development got a brief mention on last night's Channel 4 Dispatches about the Mayor, including interviews with Simon Jenkins and Michael Ball of Waterloo Community Development Group.

It's repeated on Wednesday night at 9pm on More4 or Windows users can watch it online here.

VERY interesting, a comment on public apathy and also the bullying tactics of the developers. Been there, done that. Thumbs down for BJohnson having pulled his dogs off..I'm disappointed. And I hope this ugly development gets refused.

You forgot to mention the bullying tactics of English Heritage & Westminster who seem to think it is they who decide what can get built in Southwark & Lambeth.

Excuse me, but English Heritage isnt there making mega squillions, it is just trying to preserve some of what is left.
lambeth lad Saturday 25 April 2009 7.39pm
Excuse me but English Heritage is wasting squillions of pounds it could actually use to save some actual heritage buildings rather than oppose another building purely because it is tall.

I hardly think the buildings they are replacing can be defined as heritage buildings do you?

The issue here should be the design of buildings themselves which are pretty poor.
