Morning Sharon
i had forgotton Norma but of course i remember you all,but especially you and Gary.
Sharon i know on the Aylesbury est your mum was still very near to Nancy and Tommy Mc Grath, they went back to Ireland a good few years ago after Tommy had a bad stroke, he died about a month ago I was talking to Nancy on the phone,we were chatting about people in the building's and your Mum Nora was mentioned. I think i remember when everyone moved out did Norma go to Peckham? or i might be getting mixed up with the Blackburn twins.
I dont know if you remember my mum Mary she worked in the launderette and dry cleaners in Gt Suffolk st,hope your all well the last time i saw Gary was in a pub (cant remember the name) down by Dawes st,i was out with Nancy and Tommy .

From Tim Slade: "This picture was taken c.1926. The small boy sitting in the front next to the driver is Percy Moon (see my posting on page 63) and next to him is his stepmother Molly and father Charles. Charles, who died in 1946, was my grandfather and they lived at 6 Scovell Road. Charles worked in the print so this may be a works outing. Can anyone add any information or suggestions?"

To my recollection a print works outing (or wayzgoose) would have been pretty much men only, so I don't think this could be one - maybe it was a Sunday outing.

I love the way everyone dressed in their Sunday best - they all look so smart!

By the way, Charles is the spiting image of my great grandfather, George Sparkes!

Its nostalgia time again folks and for this little story I am looking at Fred Start's photos (taken by Fred Snr. around 1929 ) posted on page 58 of the site . This little episode I call

A Room With A View
-----------------------------------
Now all the families living on the upper floors of QB along Collinson Street are very lucky indeed . Today the punters will pay zillions for the views we have from our bedroom windows but for our mums and dads, the rents paid to the Misses McDonald and Hart are less than a one pound note a week .
The view to our right take in the cranes of London docklands , bobbing up and down like yo-yos all day long . Then sweeping round from right to left we see Tower Bridge , Trinity House , Guys Tower , then the Monument , Cannon Street Station , St Pauls , Old Bailey and the Oxo Tower ( with letters in red neon at night ), all following Old Father Thames around to the Embankment .
If you crane your neck out of the bedroom window to the left you see half of the Shell-Mex House .

Now , that's what I call a room with a view .

But , hang on , we only see one half of the Shell-Mex clockface. So when it comes to New Years Eve ( or any other night for that matter ), we have to wait till for the minute hand to pass 12 midnight to see the time and shout 'Happy New Year'. My dad , a Scot from Dundee , carries a lump of coal around with him at this time and after a couple ( or more ) whiskies announces " Lang may yer lum reek " which roughly translated means "Long may your chimney smoke".( make of that what you will ).
All the adults have a good time at the Skinners/Ship/Red Lion/Winchester or any other local that each family is loyal to.

Hope everyone has a great time tonight

Happy new year to all queenies, and thanks Tone for the room with a view,i lived in collinson st but not high enough up for the site's you mentioned, had a good view of Winchester buildings the back of Gt suffolk st,and Southwark bridge rd,did we really think us in Queens buildings were better off than them in Winchester buildings, and Brigade buildings?

Well Sharon , all good wishes to you and your family for 2012 and of course to all--er.. queenies

Now, its OK for you as the girl to say Queenies but can you see me as the guy in my Essex local when someone says "Where are you from?" and I say "I am from the Borough and I am a Queenie" . That's got to be an Exit Stage Left in anybody's language.

So now I think we have a problem which I solve very easy by saying that all the boys are called "QBs" and the girls , well , "Queenies"

Is all this tongue in cheek stuff a deal ? My bookie says it is a solid evens money on this New Years Day of 2012 so a deal it is !

Happy New Year

My grandma lived in Queens Buildings off of Newington Causway (by Borough Road?) around 1912.

She had a husband and about eight or more kids in that tiny hovel ! How ever did they manage in those days.

Hi This is my first post - i've been reading all about Queens buildings. My Mother in laws family Ellen and Henry Lloyd lived at 202 Queens buildings Scovell road from at least 1918 until sometime during the second world war. I need to check dates. My grandmother in law was one of ten children although some died in childhood and she also had her 90 year old grandmother living with them. Must have been very crowded! Anyway thanks for all the stories i'm going to forward this link to my husbands aunt as she remembers Scovell road well, being born in 1930 she would have been in her teens when she moved out.
