Can you tell me if the Barnaby was the pub that had the bar that was covered in coins or was it the Prince of Wales
in ruby street thanks
As a patron of both pubs from my misspent late twenties to early forties, it was The Barnaby that had the coins, (old pennies?) stuck in the surface of the bar, it was run by George Cottle, and his wife Maureen, who also had the Red Cow in The Grange
The Prince of Wales
in Ruby Street was run by Teddy Haines, or maybe Haynes, not sure of the spelling.
At the time that I used the Prince of Wales, I was heavily involved with a Polish girl, who could have won the Miss World contest had she deigned to enter it, “our song” was Rod Stewart’s Maggie May, and it was played to death in that pub, no wonder we were always in there.
