I spent a couple of hours at Southend A&E today, (my daughter had twisted he knee rather badly.) I was shocked at the state of the waiting area. I was there a year ago with the same daughter's friend who had met with a little accident, and it was dirty then. I thought that was perhaps a 'one-off' after a very hectic day, as it was a Saturday evening. But it was no better today. Dried blood spots on the floor, a couple of dirty tissues also on the floor, a flip-top, polystyrene fast-food container on a chair and a little of the earlier contents on the floor beneath it. Is this what we must come to expect from the 21st century NHS? Or is it just my local hospital?
I spent a couple of weeks in Ugandaa five years ago and I can honestly say the departure lounge at Entebbe was cleaner than Southend A&E!
