I am almost at the end of "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters, which I am enjoying enormously, especially the references to Borough - the main character hails from Lant Street. The story does owe more than a nod to Wilkie Collins though - won't say more for fear of giving the plot away.

let me know what the book is roughly about as I am from Lant Street and would be interested to know.

It's a mystery about two girls from opposite ends of the social spectrum, whose lives become entwined.... The plot covers murder, lesbianism, erotica, thieves, baby farming, and other aspects of life in Victorian London. It's a bit long winded at times, but a good read nonetheless. I can also recommend The Love Hexagon by William Sutcliffe - bloody good read and very funny - belly laugh funny.
