Oh dear, mapmaker, bit harsh, weren't you?

If you are going to correct someone else's grammar, at least use correct grammar yourself (especially in the specific sentance correcting their grammar).

I suggest you edit your message to read, "You also need a lesson in your use of gerunds." Although, interestingly, the question you quote does not actually contain a gerund.

You won't catch my favouring a fused participle!

Oh dear. I hate it when a thread falls into pieces in such a
way. Please note: "in such a way", least my words be taken
wrongly.

“Half THE (sic) hole”?

There was no mistake there, and you was not mislead. (I am
pondering over the same person who stated that without the
variables, measurements and such, then it would be pretty much
impossible to come up with a definitive answer?) So what are you
left with? Well … You are left with the English language and of how
one would interpret it. Needless to say you had a problem with
that. The question, and answer, is within the realms of logical, and
had you tried reverse logic then you would have realised that there
is logical answer (even though you find it unsuitable for some
strange reason) and maybe this falls outside your realms of lateral
thinking? As I stated, I had the answer within thirty seconds. I am
wondering at this point if I am clever or a fool. Maybe I am closer
to a fool to have come up with the correct answer according to your
portentous and self inflicted esoteric slide-rule.

I should also state that this question was taken from Mensa.
Maybe they are fools also? I await the flack.

Yes, I am “guilty” of writing what abhorred you so much that
you couldn't carry on reading it. I hang my head in shame.
But then no one “dragged” you there. Based on the fact I take
criticism of my poetry much better than I do praise, then I have no
problems at all in how you viewed however far you read into it.
Again, such is life … and people. I should also tell you that it
isn't my URL, but neither is it a (sic) "website" either. You stated
how painful you considered the spelling mistake to have taken you to
such a frenzy of unyielding sickness? I also have the same problem
with the whole piece actually. I had no say in it being there, or the
spelling mistake that was not there on the original piece. I am so
sorry it inflicted such a horror to you. (I think I would be correct
in assuming that you wouldn't like to see any more of my work?)

How terrible cruel it must be to be so greatly "human".

But I shall continue to survive with my meagre ration of our English
language. Perhaps this way more people will understand my work
and myself, and who knows? Maybe you would understand most of all.

Critics surround me, and you are just another one. I don't mind them
at all. But I must say, an average one you are.

And now you may reach for your Unabridged Dictionary and
combined Thesaurus.

Good luck ;-)

I don't declare myself to be a poet ... merely a writer of words.

Never underestimate the power of your thoughts.

Question 24. Half of 'A' hole, not 'THE' hole.

Franklin, I was not upset, merely tongue in cheek. Mapmaker, what ever happened politeness and good manners? Criticism is fine, but should always be polite and constructive.

phoney

Yes I too have seen the same variable phoney. Thank you for
guiding me there. I saw the the debate of the question (that I
now terribly regret bringing here) of the: "the" and "A" formula in however the question was answered.

It was stated that in either case it would make no difference to the
correct answer: "there is no such thing as half a hole". It would
still be the same in either case. I do not wish to exaust this thread any more than it already is with how, why or wherefore. So I
simply give up the battle to the inellectual betters that are here.

John?

You didn't upset me friend. I took no offence at you at all, and I too
was pretty much tounge in cheek with you also. But still, the apology was there just in case it was needed. I hope
you understand that Sir, and thank you very much.

And now, it's simply a case of "endex" for me

Edit for typographical error

Of course there is such a thing as half a hole - just because it is still a hole, does not mean it is not half the hole it should be.

Jeez.....

(Using at home - bit tiddly, losing patience.)

But is it half full or half empty?

The hole I mean - not the bottle.
