Not a football man myself as the name would suggest but was at the Variety Club Sporting Awards Lunch at the Park Lane Hilton yesterday (sampling the menu of course).

Claudio Ranieri won a special award for the humility and dignity he has shown over the last few months at Chelsea FC. His speech, albeit in broken English, paid testament to what an extremely pleasant guy he really is - a true gent.

For those interested he also said that he had spoken with Spurs and Valencia and the latter was his preferred option...

Bit of a rarity nowadays - a gentleman in football. My take on it is that the game has been ruined by greed and young players blinded by the trappings it offers. One of my football mad colleagues agrees so sure not that far from the mark...

also agreed. as a chelsea fan I am disgusted at the way he has been treated over the last season - especially as we have just had the best season since the 1970s.

Chelsea have lost one of the best managers the sport has to offer.
