I want to go there in February next year and it would be interesting to know if anyone has been there - done that.

IMHO the best thing to do in Cancun is get the hell out of there and take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres - a fantastic, tiny, island with hardly any cars, nice cafes and restaurants and great beaches (about 30 minutes and another lifetime away).

In my experience, Cancun is full of cruise ships, casinos and the type of Americans who think going "abroad" to Mexico demonstrates seriously brave travel thinking...

Thanks. Cancun is not really my cup of tea, but I just want to visit the Yucatan and all his ruins (Mayans) and seeing as Cancun is the closer airport and got it all I thought i might as well book a hotel there.

From Isla Mujeres it would be tiresome having to travel on day trips to the Yucatan...... methinks.

But it is a nice thought though.

Ah, well, in that case, what about Playa del Carmen ? It's on the Yucatan Peninsular, you can drive or take day trips to all the major sites as well as some fun places like the local cenotes and craft fairs, and it's a heck of a lot nicer than Cancun. Takes about an hour on the bus (which is fun in itself if you go on one of the local ones, rather than the tourist coaches. I shared my seat with a chicken - although this was about 8 years ago).

Then, if you get bored of ruins and just fancy vegging out, you can check out Isla Mujeres for a few days of beach bumming.

amazing that Ivanhoe has not commented on the phrase "beach bumming".

Maybe he has other preoccupations? I think we should be told.

Last seen hanging out with Chris Martin and his apples (ISIWH)

Contrary to what you appear to think:

1) I don't break out into fits of giggles at any reference to bums. Even the odd "willie" leaves me generally poker-faced ;0)

2) I wouldn't attempt to try to make a sexual joke around the word "bumming" in the same way I wouldn't say the F-word on this site. IMHO it would be inappropriately rude.

Back to Mr Martin.

...if you press it, they will come.

Cancun is like Blackpool for Americans - avoid the place at all costs!! However, as you state, it is a great entry point to the Yucatan. It is (I'm fairly sure) the only place where you could fly direct in the Yucatan from London. However, these are all charter flights with rubbish leg room. You could, if you want, fly to Miami and then there ar elaods of flights down to Cancun or in to Merida.

Merid a is a beautiful colonial city, if you get a chance to go there. North of Merida, on the coast, are some lovely, unspoilt little Mexican fishing villages - no English spoken but really lovely.

In terms of placed to stay - jump on a bus in Cancun heading South to Tulum. There is a 'backpacker' type hang-out right on the beach, you can rent a Cabana (Thatched hut) or rent a hamock strung between trees. It is right by the ruins of Tulum and they are worth a visit also. It is fairly basic but I'd imagine it has become more upgraded since I was last here about 7 years ago. Chichen Itza has nice ruins also, not far from Cancun.

Yes, Tulum is very appealing, far from civilization. I might have another look, so far the beaches are great, hidden and solitary, that's what I want, so i can walk around naked and have an all over tan!!
