I was in Waterstones today and was upset to see that the lights on the main stairwell have all had their globes removed - spoiling the effect intended. In addition the toilets have all had their original sinks and basins removed. What other changes have happened that I didn't notice?

How can Waterstones get away with this vandalism of a listed building?

I hope the lamps are just temporarily away - they were a real feature of the staircase, but I have an awful fear that the health and safety dictators may have been in :(

The answer is, they can't. The last listed building application on Westminster's website for works in the public areas is for the raising of the balustrade on the stairs from 2004 (http://www.westminster.gov.uk/environment/planning/searchplanningapplications/) - the address is 203 Piccadilly.

If you think there is something amiss, Westminster's enforcement team are always willing to investigate (http://www.westminster.gov.uk/environment/planning/contact.cfm).

I would do it myself but I am involved with applications to Westminster on a professional basis :)
