Has anyone tried to control an excess of aphids by using biological controls (ladybirds, or ladybird larvae) please?

I'm interested in how you got on, and whether you have any tips.

Yes, I think that the ants are interested in the "honeydew" that is left behind once the aphids have attacked my lovely could-be-vegetables. I don't want to tempt fate, but we've not got ants (yet).

I was surprised, when walking the crops this morning, to see that one of the window boxes on our first floor balcony was sporting a quite big mushroom. I certainly didn't put it there, and the compost is fresh this year, so I wonder how it got there?
