HDD - no digital?

I bought an HDD box the other day, so I can record lots of Wimbledon while I'm at work - the highlights package really doesn't do it for me. I've set up the unit, but it only recognizes BBC1 and 2, ITV and Channels 4 and 5, whereas on my TV, which has a built-in digibox, I get loads of other channels. Any ideas how I can resolve this?

I expect it will recognise the channel that your digibox plays through (possibly Channel 6 or Channel 8).

However I don't think that you will be able to, say, go on holiday and record one programme from your digibox on day 1, on channel Z, and then record another programme on day 2, on channel x.

I think that this functionality is only available via Sky+. If it isn't, then I'd love to know how you can get it without getting a Sky+ box.

...if you press it, they will come.

longlaner - any idea what make/model your box is?

Ivanhoe - your digibox most likely has its own timer function so you can get it to change channels in your absence.

This means if you are using it with, say, a VCR, you have to set up two timers for each programme you want to record. But it is quite possible.

Erm... my limited technological knowhow (aka common sense) is being stretched to the full here.

I have a Samsung plasma screen with a built-in digibox. It's not visible, but the set picks up a host of channels when connected using a standard aerial, and there's no dedicated channel for my digital reception.

I think the key question is whether your HDD recorder box has its own digital tuner or not, which is why it would be helpful to have some idea of make/model

It's an LG RH188.

Thanks James. I'll have to see how to make my digibox change channels in my absence. It's very frustrating when you go away for the weekend and want to tape one Rugby League game on Friday on Sky Sports 1 and another on Saturday on SS3 (although I realise that not many others on here will share my specific frustration in this instance;0))

Seems that model only has an analogue tuner. You'll need to spend another 20 or so on its own Freeview box.

Thanks. In that case I was missold the HDD unit, as I explained that my digibox was integral to my TV. I think I'll return to where I bought the HDD and politely complain.

I don't have Sky+ but I do have something similar, a Humax twin-tuner recordable Freeview digibox. Its only major flaw is that to archive anything onto DVD you have to hook it up to a DVD recorder and record it in "real time".
