I am after some baby advice again. (I must say I find SE1 a better source of advice than the specialised baby fora online!)
How and at what age did you wean your babies? Government advice is no earlier than 4 months, and milk only is enough for the first 6 months.
Martha is now 17 weeks and is fully breastfed. I will go back to work soon, I will express milk for her at work, but it would be good if she could have one or two meals a day without milk. We have given her some mashed banana (great success) and some pureed carrot (not quite as keen). These attempts have just been for fun and no meal has been replaced yet.
If you decrease breast feeding SLOWLY, replacing feeds gradually and accustoming her to formula, you can get it so that you only feed her once or twice (in the morning before work, before bed...whatever). Your milk will adjust accordingly. That's if you want to. She's had a good start. You could also start trying to give her a bit of mashed banana or pureed veg to get her used to the "feel" of other foods.
We started around 6 months. The lad is 11 months old now and is only breast-fed just before he goes to sleep.
We found he loved mashed sweet-potato as a first weaning food. Since then he has home-made versions of whatever we have; risotto, pasta with tomato sauce, curry, etc and seems to love them all! We just leave out all the spicier seasoning and chop everything up really small.
In the old days it was three months before introducing Farex into the bottle, or when the babe weighed 12 pounds. But I think it's better to leave it a bit later than that advice because babes organs handle milk a lot better than processed baby foods. Jackies advice is good, and Jonathan can i come to lunch!
I used to give mine mashed up banana from about 4 months and i also used to mash up what i was cooking for us as well probably from 5 months onwards-though if any veg in he used to spit it out and still won't eat it.I did not completely replace the milk i gave him a small amount of solids then topped him up with milk for a while till he got used to it - it wasn't long before he wanted the solids more than the milk.
Thank you. She is now eating mashed sweet potato, mashed banana, mashed avocado and mashed carrots. Seems we don't have a fussy eater. I hope she'll eat the family meal (mashed or pureed) in two months...
