This is still a bit experimental (so it's not linked from the main news pages) but I thought I'd unleash this on the forum:

The SE1 News Map: http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/map.php

It shows the most recent news reports/features/reviews plotted on a map, so you can see what's been happening near where you live/work.

Suggestions for improvements welcome.

That is a fantastic feature James; great use of the Google mapping service. Can't think of anything that needs to be done to improve it!

Fantastic!

as someone who works with maps, I think this is pretty impressive!

I never knew there were so many lakes in Finland!

Cool - a great addition to the site!

.......

edited to add -
you can get close up maps (same as for London) for the whole of America by the looks of things.
You can't get them for the whole world.

some kind of scale bar, or indicator of distance would be good James.

edited again - WOW the satelite imagery is fantastic!

Good idea - the scale now appears at the bottom of the map. Thanks.

The News Map has been upgraded to version 2 of the Google Maps API, which incorporates better aerial photography. It should also load much faster.

The News Map is looking good - it's inspired me to get on and do the one for Dark Screens, so it's your fault I'm getting no work done this week. Which site do you use to get the coordinates, by the way - I am using http://www.infosports.com/m/map.htm but if there's a better one (the holy grail of postcode searching would be nice, wouldn't it) let me know...

First few are up: http://www.darkscreens.co.uk/southwarkmap.asp

Cheers
Mark.

I use http://www.mapbuilder.net to get the lat/lon

Cheaper access to postcode geocoding would be nice, but ultimately it's not accurate enough for our needs, so it wouldn't offer much advantage over manual geocoding.
