WHAT?? That's what we just read surely! Isnt it When I Lived in Modern Times?

I think you're right jackie

I think so too - ERFSL was the one we just read (well a few of us did), and discussed on Wednesday.
The book to read by, and discuss on, Feb 3rd, is 'When I Lived in Modern Times'

Really? I was at book club on Wednesday & must have missed the discusssion then!
JonR Monday 7 December 2009 10.50am
we discussed it a bit less than usual, which to be honest, when we normally only discuss it for a short time anyway, this was even less. Jackie said that it was not worth recommending to anyone, Carol R said that she got to the end and thought "...so what? ..... and?!" I'd only read the first few pages, and said that I thought it was a very easy read. The five of us at our end of the table hadn't read it anyway, only the three at the other end had read it.... as I said, discussion on the book was thin on the ground.
We can always discuss it again next time, if more people have read it.

Well how odd is this...
I'm in Lancashire, reading a book bought in Suffolk, about the last Maharajah of Lahore, when what should pop up, but an SE1 reference - the second Maharani and a central character, is from Newington Butts, by the Elephant and Castle!
looks like I may have to add it to the book club's reading list!

Ah. But what is the book CALLED, Chustler? Well I've just finished The Yacoubian Building (not bad) as I've already read When I Lived in Modern Times, and also before that read Sarah Water's The Little Stranger which was really VERy good...I've always avoided her because she's such a professional lesbian and all her books have been about that...however no lesbians in this one and it's very gripping. I read Let The Great World Spin Colin McCallum, which I thought OK...it won the World Lit Prize something something...but didnt find it THAT good. All recommendations gladly received!

I like the "Christmas in Sidney" bit, boroughpaul, and actually the Professor and I should also have been in Sidney this Christmas but for my mother and her precarious health. We could have had our own private book club!

Well done Paul! See you on 3 February for the first book club of 2010.
Should we start a new thread, perhaps?
