Looking for a decent tradesman

I have recently bought a property and require some major renovation work. I'm a bit sceptical about using the yellow pages and most of the companies that offer "Approved Tradesmen" have been on one of those watchdog type programmes.
Any advice or help would be welcome.

I've just found Vetted Tradesmen [link removed]. They check 30% of tradesmens jobs - sound promising.
