Beetroot, I used to cycle in London pretty much every day for over 30 years. Now I live in Devon, but when I come back to London I use the cyclescheme bikes (won't give away my political leanings with a prefix) to get around. I guess I must be one of those idiots.
I cycle every day to work and back - I never jump a red light, there is no need to put myself in danger. I disagree with the common argument "it's safer" - if you put yourself in front of traffic it is just as safe. Tonight I had a cyclist in front of me who jumped the temporary lights on Tooley Street, where one lane is closed, and she cycled calmly straight into the oncoming traffic on the same lane - how stupid and reckless is that?

For me the worst are pedestrians though, hopping out of the blue into the cycle lane without any consideration for cyclists, often with headphones so they don't hear my bell at all, leaving me the choice to either drive into them or swerving to the road to be potentially hit by a car. Especially bad when you come from the north end of London Bridge and turn into Tooley - people happily crossing the road at the red traffic light in masses without any regard for traffic. Frustrating.

[SE1 Discussion] Are you worried about the health of a friend or family member? We can help you help them!

Hello forum members,

We are in the process of designing a new service in Southwark that will help people to manage their health.

Are you worried about the health of a friend or family member?

Will it get worse if they don't change... but you're not sure how to support / motivate them?
It's not easy to have a positive influence on your friends and family members.
With Hold Me To It you can learn how to be there for your friends when they struggle to manage their health, get ill or depressed.

We often hear people say:
• I feel too close to make the difference
• I need a different way of approaching it
• They won’t listen to me
• I don’t want to take on all responsibility
• I don’t want to damage our relationship

Hold Me To It (www.holdmetoit.net) uses the potential of people's social networks to make small, positive changes easier to maintain. It supports you to create a new habit and stick to it by asking the people around you to help out when life gets in the way. You can use it with someone you care about to support them with maintaining healthy habits or with trying a new routine.

What does Hold Me To It do?
Hold Me To It provides you with practical tools and advice to help you:
• offer your support to the person you care about
• make and sustain a change together
• approach difficult conversations with them
• remind, track, listen and encourage them
• not get overwhelmed yourself
• feel confident you’re doing the right thing

Are you interested?
For more information and signing up - get in touch with Kate or Busayo on 0207 089 6962.

Hold Me To It is part of a project called Social Health which is being run in Southwark by a local Social Enterprise called Participle (www.participle.net) in a partnership that includes Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, (www.gsttcharity.org.uk). Much of what we have developed so far is based on what we've learned from conversations with people from this forum, as well as input from other local individuals, groups and professionals.

I am rather surprised to see some people arguing that we can't have more council properties because of lack of infrastructure. This is true of any housing, do you want all building to stop?

It is carelessness of people, not cyclists.

I would hazard a guess that as a percentage, more people on bikes are careful than anyone else, in London particularly, including people when they wander in to the road on their ipods.

Of course there is a minority who are careless in all walks of life.
I agree. I also suspect as cyclist, black cabs and busses are either in the 'minority' or highly visible when looking at wider traffic it's quite easy to 'stamp' them as what they are. Would be interesting to see a proper study with numbers and compare this to abroad too.
It was obvious that you were royally p***ed off at this cretin's action Mr. Pepper, no one could blame you for that.
But do you feel now, so many years later, that you may have over-reacted?
Let me be perfectly clear on this, I'm not saying for one minute that you DID over- react, the selfish oaf definitely deserved some retribution, but the fact that you felt it necessary to go out with a weapon for presumably possible self protection indicates that you may have felt that you'd pushed him a bit far.
I think your closing sentence sums it up though, he'll be unlikely to chance it again if he comes back to see the flotilla.
It was a long time ago DJ, and I have calmed down considerably since then.
To fill in a blank in my original post, my first thought at the time was to call the police, although I knew that they would be unable to make much difference to the situation, and that the prat who'd parked on my drive had already "won" by default.
They duly arrived, quite quickly as I recall.
They explained that they had traced the registered keeper's address en-route, from the plate number I had given them over the phone, and it was an address somewhere between Nottingham and Leicester.
To send a local copper to the address, ascertain a mobile number for the driver, then try to call him was asking a bit much they quietly explained, although they sympathised with my anger.
They said that as much as it went against the grain, I would be better off waiting for him to return and take it away.
I suggested having it towed away, they said that they could not arrange that, and that if I got someone else to do it and the offending vehicle was damaged then in the eyes of the law I would be held responsible.
So ultimately the action that I took was the only legal thing that I could do that would inconvenience him, and make him suffer.
Feeling that he might in frustration damage the old Land Rover, (if that were possible), I had made sure that he saw the bat inside my hallway and advised him, (NOT THREATENED), to think twice before doing anything rash.
Just to be safe I had the bat with me when I finally let him out.
In retrospect, my over-riding emotion on that occasion was of impotence, not fury or anger, okay, anger too.
Orione appears to be saying that he doesn't want an influx of social housing tenant's as they will be poor. I'm pretty sure that Orione doesn't actually mean that and I think most of us would disagree.
Zoe, my god. It must be my English but I couldn't be more far from this concept. As I say, I LIVE in a council estate. And I am not rich or have a super stable job. When I can I lend some money to whom need them, sometimes I need to tight the belt. But I am fed up of seeing more important problems being left to the residents's patience and sensibility to resolve rather than seeing the house management taking care of. Not only taking my service charge.

In London Bridge there is a massive divide between who have and who have not, and in my view is not going to get better. So before building more houses why not tackling these issues. Is it more clear? Please let me know. Thank you
OK then, let's just keep packing more people into the area. 20,000 people are on the waiting list, bring them all in. But public transport and local services like doctors and schools are struggling. You already sometimes wait a week or more for an appointment at Decima street, adding 3 or 4 thousand new people in Long Lane isn't going to help. Or waiting at Bricklayers Arms while 4 or 5 packed buses sail past, not stopping. Relentlessly adding homes but not services seems irresponsible to me
Very true, Infrastructure, which is not only groceries, should grow with the population.

Regarding managements: TI believe the point where most housing management fails is at managing antisocial behavior, which often is in their contracts.

Not to speak about the poor jobs that contractors appointed usually do and get away with, after we have paid our service charges for nothing.
So why not spending these money to make better what is not good enough? Can we not regulate these things. Than we can have more social housing. (I understand they are two separate matters).
