I assume many people saw the report in the Evening Standard a couple of weeks ago 'Drivers to blame for two-thirds of bicycle collisions in Westminster'?

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/drivers-to-blame-for-twothirds-of-bicycle-collisions-in-westminster-8602166.html

Summarising a survey carried out by Westminster City Council of accidents involving cyclists in its area, they reported:

68% were the fault of motor vehicle drivers

20% were the fault of cyclists

12% both were to blame or the cause was not determined

Of 133 collisions in Westminster in the last three years between cyclists and pedestrians 60% were the pedestrian's fault, 40% the cyclist's.

Only 8% of incidents were down to cyclists ignoring red lights.

I know you can't trust statistics (and motorists have already tried to come up with reasons why accidents in which they are at fault are over-reported!) but a couple of conclusions are possible.

1: if a cyclist collides with a pedestrian, it's more likely to be the pedestrian's fault than the cyclist's.

2: cyclists jumping red lights are a) BREAKING THE LAW and b) a b****y nuisance, but it isn't as dangerous as you might think, compared with the risk of being knocked over by a motorist 'failing to look properly' (21%) or 'driving recklessly' (13%).

John C
Sorry, but I think that's rubbish.

I think that in most accidents the blame is in some way shared.

I mainly think this because I see it as part of every road user's responsibility (including pedestrians) to be aware of what's going on around them and to act accordingly.
Don't apologise, Ivanhoe - take it up with whoever carried out the survey for Westminster City Council - unfortunately the original survey doesn't seem to be available on the Web. I'm sure they will understand that your view that accidents are the responsibility of every road user should take priority over their figures, which I expect are based upon an assumption that in most specific accidents the balance of blame lies fairly with one rather than the other of the people involved. It's an assumption shared by the police and law-courts as well - otherwise we wouldn't see any prosecutions for dangerous driving or the like.

The SmartMeter replaces your original one and it's connected to a central computerised hub so there is no need for someone to come to read your meter. I'm not sure why it should have a negative effect on large estates because I assume if they have their own meters now they would still have their own SmartMeters. I think they would probably be compulsory in time though.

Well I went today at lunchtime - it was pretty busy. The development consists of 400 new homes (25% are some form of social housing), 16.5kft retail space and 35k office space.

My main concern is the rather hideous 28 storey builing which dwarfs the St Georges circus monument. The nearest building (8 storey's) to the circus is set back and there will be some public space/courtyard (linked to Library Street) which is likely to be in the shadow of the 28 storey block.

The ground floor of the development will be retail units/cafes, which of course in the marketing pamph. are busy cycling cafes and fab restaurants with tables outside. Living on Blackfriars road the only people I see outside are the hardiest of smokers. Twice they mentioned how they were trying to create a Grande Boulevard similar to those in Paris!

With the exception of the 28 storey tower its not a terrible development (especially compared to what's there already) but the buildings are so bland I just think its a bit of a missed opportunity.

Hi - we just found a nanny by posting on Gumtree - in my experience you will not find a nanny throught the SE1 web site, unless you are very lucky.

Also there is no such thing as an 'ofsted registered nanny' - ofsted only register childminders in their own home, not nannies operating in your home.

You can CRB check a nanny or find on with a valid CRB, but a new check take 2-3 months so is largely useless.

We just went on references - spoke to previous families, checked the ID of the nanny etc. and ultimately you have to go on gut feel. Even a CRB check tells you very little - basically only if someone has been prosecuted of a crime, which is very rare.

We pay £10/ hour cash. I hope you find this info useful. PM me if you want more info.

I read about this yesterday - absolutely disgusting and I hope this woman feels the full recourse of her actions.

What this article ignores of course, is that road tax or not, there will be a huge number of 'cyclists' who also own cars and pay their vehicle excise duty every year - just like Miss Way.
What I find worrying about is that aparently Ms Way is only 20 years old. What kind of driver will she develop into when she grows up? Or will this be a lesson to her and other young drivers? I hope so. I also wonder how much programs like Barely Legal Drivers do to encourage to behave in traffic.
Hopefully the embarrassment and other repercussions will raise her awareness and force her to address her attitude problem (which borders on psychopathic, boasting about endangering the life of another person).

I'd like to think that the kind of driver she will develop in to is one without access to a license or a motorised vehicle!

I tried to have this out with the local authority and BTP (as its up to them to prosecute around the Station )
Take a look at Tokyo they have designated smoking areas in the street at least they then would be stationary and close to a bin (put one in every smoking area)
They inflict their habit and leave their filth , this is a dirty city Bangkok is cleaner
could go on but with no help from anyone its hard to know what to do
I assume many people saw the report in the Evening Standard a couple of weeks ago 'Drivers to blame for two-thirds of bicycle collisions in Westminster'?

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/drivers-to-blame-for-twothirds-of-bicycle-collisions-in-westminster-8602166.html
