best chinese is easy peasy. Thames Takeaway on Tanner Street - excellent food, non-prententious (no chopsticks, no delivery, no eat-in just collection) and very good value. We eat from them two or three times a week and I can't sing their praises enough. The woman there can serve and calculate the change for five people at the same time as answering the phone! Everything they do is cooked to perfection.

Agree with Auntie Pat - Mumbai is pretty good - they deliver or takeaway. My two favourites though are Lovage in Queen Elizabeth St which does take away (sadly not delivery but might be worth checking again) or as mentioned before the Tower Tandoori. Bengal Clipper is terible these days - don't waste time or money there. Tower Bridge tandooru even worse - I'm not sure how it still exists.
Now...best chinese?

I couldn't initially find the offer on this site because it's not listed on the special offers page.
hi boroughpaul, just seen your response. I didn't complain on this occasion; ordinarily I would, for example if I had a 'duff' meal from somewhere I regularly use, but this was my first experience of Nawaz and definitely my last. Of course, my taste will differ from yours, but I am confident that anyone tasting the lamb biryani (which is a classic and very simple Indian dish - confirmed to me again now by an Indian colleague). I can, however, assure all readers of this forum that my food was not up to scratch. The same meal, perfectly cooked and tasty, would cost about £12 in Tooting and that would be eating in!

Having read good words, we duly tried Cafe Nawaz tonight. What a disappointment!

Food arrived relatively quickly but the meat in the lamb biryani, a simple, supposedly traditional classic dish, was rubbery to the point of tasting like plastic. The chapatis were stale and to be honest I feel rather sick. The price was, in my opinion, certainly at the top end of the market, yet the food was below average. I certainly don't think I'll be ordering from Cafe Nawaz again after tonight's meal.

Given I started this thread, I think it's only fair that I post back the results of my, um, research.

Following the advice, I've tried Cafe Nawaz, Morely Tandoori, and Tower Tandoori. I found the first two to be good, but not great. Tower Tandoori was hands down winner though. So much so that I haven't gotten around to trying Simply Indian as I keep going back to them. Had a Lamb Jalfrezi (or, Zalfrezi here) on Friday that was fantastic.

Somebody commented that they thought Tower Tandoori was a little bit cheaper than others. I seem to be spending a little bit more than I used to, but it could be that I'm just ordering more because it's so tasty ;-)

I will give Simply Indian a go in the near future.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice
another vote for Nawaz - very good, quick friendly delivery and reasonably priced. although my one criticism is that they aren't the hottest (not like in temperature but hot as in spicy) curries around, so I usually ask for mine a bit hotter when I order.
You should try the Paneer Massala - it's like eating molten lava. I love hot curries but I'd probably eat it again only for a dare, delicious though it was.

Simply Indian is still the best - very fresh tasting Indian food.

I've been eating there for five years (onsite and takeaway) and have never had a problem.
Some friends think it is the best curry in London, not just SE1

Excellent. Thanks everybody. I've not tried any of the ones that have been mentioned. The menus all look good, but I especially liked this quote on the Mumbai website:
"The food is great" - Father Alan - The Most Holy Trinity Church Dockhead
Fine praise indeed =]

Now, just need to decide which to try first!

Many thanks.
