I've just come back from visiting friends in Dublin. OK it's smaller than London, but anyone that knows it, knows that the cities roads are rammed. I wanted to take advantage of the newly installed dublin bikes (http://www.dublinbikes.ie/). It would have been a great way to re-explore the city. I use my bike every day in London and so was fairly confident about cycling there. However as I was staying on the Northside, pretty much all the bike stands were empty after the morning rush hour. Every one seemed to pick up a bike and rode it into town, then nobody brought them out again until the end of the day. What was great was that you could check if stands had bikes online. I hope that Boris has thought about a fleet of lorries/vans to move bikes from where they are, to where they are needed. Without that it could be difficult to get bikes on the outer fringes of zone 2. One positive, apparently only a very small number of the bikes have gone missing.

hang on - this is crazy!
They're not putting bike hire racks in stations (the obvious place for people to pick them up and use them) because they'll be overused, and people will complain that there aren't any available, so instead they put them in places like Bricklayers Arms Roundabout! A huge roundabout, main roads on all sides, bad pedestrian access routes (higher percieved crime rate around underpasses?), generally not a destination (ie somewhere you go 'through' rather than 'to'), and so likely to fail when it comes to being a good place for bike hire stands.
For this to work, you need to get commuters using them, rather than (as well as!) locals.
A better place (imo of course), would be outside of smaller tube and train stations that only serve one route (Southwark, Bermondsey, Borough, Lambeth North, etc), or in bus stations (already covered by CCTV, generally safer environments).

I read an article the other day, where a TfL bod was saying that they were specifically siting them away from mainline stations because there was no way that they could keep up with the demand that would come from commuters getting off the trains, and that it was better to not provide bikes at stations then to attempt to do it (when they knew they could only fail dismally).

Looks like there will be some within 300m of mainline stations - as they're all in zone 1/2 it would be almost impossible not to be within 300m of a mainline station.
There will be far more than I realised - 400 location. Or at least that's what's planned.

Lambeth council have published a detailed list of locations - including Lambeth North tube station, a few on Lower Marsh and some just around the Royal Festival hall.

I'm actually quite impressed.

On a related note - does anyone know what a cycle superhighway is meant to be. The best I can gather is that it is a cycle lane painted blue instead of green?

Surely this just means that, rather than looking on the station concourse and seeing that there aren't any bikes available, one will now have to walk 300m to see that there are no bikes available.

Hmm... I think I got a little bit grumpy in my post earlier - apologies for that. I agree Southwark bridge is ideal for crossing, but given I live on Tower Bridge road and work near liverpool st, it's not an option for me.

My point from way back when was that I think the roads are dangerous in this area and that these public rental bikes are a bad idea. I'm used to the roads around here now, but I still get the occasional scare. Putting this rental scheme in these areas isn't the smartest move. Something reinforced by these kind of comments:
There are some roads and junctions cyclists should simply not be allowed near for their own safety.

It is quite possible to cycle perfectly safely on most of London's roads - there are roads where this isn't possible - like London Bridge. The answer is simple - go over another bridge or continue having 'that was a bit close moments.'
Given what people are saying, is it such a good idea to put these bikes within spitting distance of London and Tower Bridge?

I'm with Ivanhoe on this. It doesn't matter who is at fault, a cyclist will come off worse. Even a minor bump at low speeds can be serious.
Riding a motorbike is very different - you have the speed to get out of trouble and move with the rest of the traffic - or past the rest of the traffic.

I suspect the reason I've not had any near misses as a cyclist - I have had near misses on my motorbike - is that I am more careful on a pushbike. I use Southwark Bridge to cross the river - it's safe as houses. I would never cross Black Friars/London or Tower on a push bike.

My comments are mainly as a motorcylist, but I'd say they were at least partially relevant (other road users don't seem to be able to see us, in just the same way as they don't see cyclists).

I've had a couple of close moments (thankfully, not recently), and I've got to say that they have been at least partially down to me being impatient to make progress (leading to me being too close to another vehicle, chancing the overtake when it wasn't really there, not being prepared to wait my turn, etc), or to me not riding defensively (or, sometimes, assertively, enough).

It's easy to blame the other person, but I'd rather adopt the "everyone's out to get me" approach and get home safely, than to be calling other people muppets and arguing the toss over who was in the wrong from the back of an ambulance.

Like you, I work near Liverpool St. I've had near misses on both London Bridge and Tower Bridge. The other bridges are not practical to use. London bridge has included a bus driver cutting lanes on a corner and running me onto the pavement and a few bumps at the north end of the bridge in the morning in the crush of cars and busses. Tower bridge problems are people overtaking where there is no room, or people generally gawping out of the window and drifting lanes. The North end is also a little harry in the morning if you need to overtake on the right. I've been cycling in London for 12 years, but only moved south of the river this year and find those two bridges a nightmare. Away from the bridges there are the muppets who overtake and then turn left, the idiots that drive thru the giveways that run alondside the cyclepaths as you are passing, and the clowns who open their car doors as you pass.

I'm suprised if you've never had just one of these thing happen in your many years of cycling. Good look in the future with that.

Was there an increase in accidents in Paris when it was introduced? Having driven there people seemed just the same as London drivers, so it seems comparable. I've noticed that having cyclists around slows down lots of drivers, so there's the possibility lots more cyclists will have a very positive effect. Either way people have the right to cycle and we should encourage those who want to be part of making London better.

I also don't think there's any evidence new cyclists are more likely to break the law, but let's set a good example. I've realised that when I stop at red lights people behind me stop, but if I'm towards the back of a group I'll see people ahead jumping the lights. Clearly moral pressure is effective, I wonder if there are other uses for my super power, lol.

On the other hand of course it could be a really great way to get more of a critical mass of all types of cyclists on the roads, which will make vehicles more accustomed to sharing the road with them. This could help remove people's fear of the road and reduce that as a source of pavement cycling.

It should also give a much wider pool of people the option of trying cycling and learning how to ride - perhaps even without wobbling - in traffic. It may even give drivers a really convenient way of being able to leave the car at home when not carrying lots of stuff.

Who knows, deciding to cycle for a specific journey may even become a function of common sense and convenience that is perceived as being open to all rather than an all encompassing lifestyle choice!
It's far too dangerous, especially when you consider that the users of these rented bikes are going to be 'recreational' cyclists. London's roads aren't cyclist friendly. Well intentioned plans, but possibly irresponsible.
I completely agree - I've been cycling since 2006 and I'm also a bit of a 'taking the lane' cyclist (I'm assertive and very used to judging which drivers are probably going to do idiotic things that will endanger me (like overtaking me and then immediately turning left for a start)) and I think that I still have probably around two experiences per week where I go - 'Sheesh, that was a bit close...'

The idea of uneducated, slow, wobbly cyclists newly taking to the road in zone 1 scares the **** out of me.

And that's not even considering all the lack of bike etiquette (as I call it) that'll be evident (pavement riding/ pedestrian crossing jumping/ undertaking etc) to make people hate cyclists even more!

Sigh...

It could be to do with Boris's cycling initiative scheme. He wants a few thousand more cyclists on London streets. Not sure if it's the greatest idea really. I'm a seasoned cyclist, and so do the whole aggressive, 'taking the lane' style of cycling, yet have very nearly been mown down three time by TFL buses since moving into SE1 about 6 months back. Tower Bridge Road, Tower Bridge and London Bridge are particularly dangerous. I love cycling, and would love to see more people doing it, but I'm seriously concerned about getting more people on bikes in London. It's far too dangerous, especially when you consider that the users of these rented bikes are going to be 'recreational' cyclists. London's roads aren't cyclist friendly. Well intentioned plans, but possibly irresponsible.
