You've forgotten one key group in all of this - the pedestrians. Many pedestrians (a far higher percentage than that of drivers or cyclists in my eyes) are irresponsible and careless. You criticise a cyclist for listening to headphones, but what about those on foot who walk into a cycle lane, or into the road, unable to hear the cyclist ringing their bell? It happens to me on a daily basis, yet it's rare I ever see a cyclist speed through a red light - most will slow right down and use their judgement as to whether or not to proceed.

I cycle, and I walk, and I drive. I can appreciate all 3 views, and as you say, it is the careless individuals, not their mode of transport, that is the problem, but lets not forget that those on foot are quite often also careless and blissfully unaware of their own responsibility to themselves and others.
If we just use blanket labels of 'cyclist' and 'driver', there is a lot of fault on both sides. But it isn't fair to treat everybody the same and tar them with these stereotypes. We are dealing with individuals. The problem isn't cyclists. The problem isn't drivers of motor vehicles. There are unbelievably responsible and courteous people in each of these groups. The real problem is that some individuals are just plain irresponsible, careless and dangerous. They can be in either group. They could even be in both of these groups.

The only real way to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers would be to get people like this off the roads completely- be them drivers of motor vehicles *or* cyclists.

When walking to work this morning (approx 08:30), I saw a young lady cyclist who was very lucky not to end up under the wheels of skip carrying truck this morning at the Tooley St/Tower Bridge Road junction. The cyclist was heading East along Tooley Street and was attempting to go straight over at the junction. The truck was travelling in the opposite direction and was turning right. Rather than stop and give way to the cyclist, the truck turned across her path. Lucky she managed to stop, falling off her bike in the process. The truck driver just continued South down TBR without even stopping to see if she was okay. The cyclist was back on her bike and heading away before I could speak to her. The lights for the cyclist were on green through the whole incident, so as far as I can tell she did nothing wrong.

I wasn't able to get the details of the truck due to it charging off, but I'll write to the Met Polices Commercial Vehicle Unit that was mentioned above in the hope that they have CCTV coverage of what happened.

Not only that, but it has clear signals as well, i.e. the signs painted on the road itself, indicating that GGS has precedence, and a street sign indicating that turning right is prohibited. Both these signals are consistently ignored, also by drivers who use that little dead end back alley on the other side of GGS to park or deliver. It used to be a very quiet street, quite safe for cyclists, schoolchildren and other pedestrians, but now it appears to have been contaminated by the general traffic madness as well. I am writing to the council to draw their attention to this, but I doubt it will be picked up, unless something serious happens.

America Street, which runs between SBR and Great Guildford Street is a tiny little road, mainly used by cars using the car wash and occasionally as short cut by those in the know. There is never a lot of traffic in that part of Great Guilldford Street either, and that lulls you into a false sense of security. Well, it did me any way as I was looking for safer alternatives to cycling on Southwark Street and SBR. A few weeks I was coming from the left when a white van came out of America Street, turning right into GGS (not allowed) with the driver only looking for traffic coming from the left. He didn't even brake, and missed me by a whisker. The driver saw me, and in all fairness, he apologised. Mistakes happen, and I hope it taught him a lesson. Now that all the scaffolding has gone, more and faster traffic comes through America Street. I always stop there now, although I have right of way. Yesterday this proved a lifesaver, as a taxi came shooting out, turning left into GGS. The driver never saw me. Today, a private car did the same thing, although the driver looked but far too late, and again had I not paid attention, something could have happened. It is only a matter of time before something will. It's not just cyclists that are at risk, it's any traffic.

There are a few "issues" I think with cycling in London. The non-existing cycling paths are a good start, the fact that drivers don't actually learn how to deal with cyclists and maniac cyclists. I have seen many near misses where the cyclist was clearly at fault (some of them even between cyclists). Perhaps everyone should be a bit more considerate and careful when using the road and be wary of what I would call the "dead corner" in the mirror of a car. You know the bit I mean, the bit you can't actually see?

The Congestion Charge MIGHT, just MIGHT, have worked in making the roads of the capital less congested if those that planned and implemented it hadn't believed their own projections re the number of drivers who would give up their cars and take to public transport rather than pay it.
I freely admit that I do not know the percentages involved, but it must have been presumed that many would quit, never to return to their cars, as within twelve to eighteen months of the CC's inception a whole tranche of roads was closed to vehicles and others that had adequately carried two way traffic for years suddenly became one way for motor vehicles, the other way for cycles, e.g. Torrington Place WC1.
Trafalgar Square became Trafalgar mini round and all surrounding approach roads became semi permanently static due to the eight second green phased traffic lights that are there.
A slew of traffic lights that were "tweaked" into longer red phases under Gauleiter Livingstone were allegedly going to be "de-tweaked" by Mr. Johnson, I wouldn't recommend holding one's breath while waiting for that to occur.

I was still taking in the news of this young man's tragic death when I heard that a young woman cyclist had beek killed in Hackney. What a shocking waste of two young lives. I hope we can all learn something from these events. Cyclists/motor-cyclists, some of you need to lose the, 'it can't happen to me,' mentality. As for us four-wheelers, we need to remind ourselves every time we go out on the road that those on two wheels, or for that matter on foot, are flesh and blood and are not, like us, cocooned inside a metal protector, i.e. the bodywork of our vehicles. Tragedy can strike in the blink of an eye and we can't turn the clock back.

I think Mutton put it very well, but he missed out something. The roads themselves need to be made more relevant to the type of use they can accomodate. SC and TfL need to build into their plans what the roads are capable of carrying safely and where to direct the heavier flows of traffic - yes I hear those who live near main roads shout they don't need more traffic - but small roads can't carry safely large vehicles. If the volume of traffic itself is a problem, which I beleive it to be, then we need to be thinking about other ideas too, not only road safety but actual traffic management (limitation?), especially now that the Congestion Charge has simply turned into a tax on road users rather than a deterrent.

A very fair and balanced response Mutton. The rules of the road are there for a reason, several years ago a car driver pulled out of Ann Moss Way, wanted to go right.. instead of turning left and going around the roundabout back up the road, they did an illegal right turn into the traffic hit this poor motorcyclist and killed him. His wife and family were in a car following him and saw the whole thing.

That scene will be etched in their minds forever.

Not only should new cars have the fasten your seat belts indicators, when the doors open a its a pity a voice cant shout out wait..look...

I went past today to put some flowers down. There were a few people there already, and one of them was completely distraught. It was heartbreaking.

Pops - I sympathise with you in many ways . I was nearly hit on Monday lunchtime myself by *two* cyclists who blatantly ignored red lights at a pedestrian crossing.

Sterner policing of vehicle drivers would be good. 'Trivial' things such as turning without indicating, dangerous overtaking, or simply opening a car door in the path of cyclists should be clamped down on and points/bans dished out. Likewise for cyclists, maybe we need to be licensed too and get hammered with fines and bans for running lights and endangering pedestrians - I'd be very willing to do that. I can't stand the behaviour of some cyclists. I don't want to be associated with them, and can see why people have can issues with cyclists.

If people can't be responsible enough around others, they should be given the privilege to be on the road. It's something that should be earned

I noticed Boris has picked up on both this incident and the sad news of another cyclists death under the wheels of a tipper truck up the road in Victoria park today - . It coincides with the launch of an educational campaign aimed at making people *think*. I doubt it will really achieve anything though. It's hard to change people behaviour. S gimmicky advertising campaign isn't going to make any impression on somebody's nature.

Like I said, no one deserves to die but I myself have been knocked by cyclists at crossings when the green man says I can cross. Am I in the wrong for crossing when I have the right?? They to need to have there wits about them. Cycling with ear phones in, hands free kits for their mobiles etc they may hear larger vehicles before they see them. As for the cyclist in Bermondsey Street with his kids in tow, well I would of rather of seen them on the pavement taking their time rather than trying to keep up with their dad.
No body deserves to die, but not all cyclist are angels on the roads. I was walking home from work yesterday along Bermondsey Street. A cyclist and his two children in tow were in the road. How stupid is that to have your kids cycle in the road?
We back to blaming the victim again? The family of the victim will draw some comfort from that.Plesae rememeber that very morning Boris was leading the call, again, to encourage the up-take of cyclists on our streets.
Recently Weston Street has had two initiatives: the junction of Leathemarket Street (Southwark Council) and Snowsfields (Team London Bridge). Neither were aimed at safety, neither discouraged speeding and neither party will put their hands up to acknowledge their complicity in wasting money when lives should be the primary goal.
I wish the family every respect and was heartened to see locals had placed flowers and candles outside the Rose pub.
