For some reason, the self-service tills at the Tesco metro spend more time saying 'assistance needed' than they spend working properly. I actually dislike self service as I find it takes longer than a staffed till, particularly for loose items like rolls, as it takes so long to find the item. I just disagreed with se1lurker's claim that the supermarket groups don't want to have anything bigger than Tesco Express/Sainsbury's Local in central London as it's clearly not the case.

I also disagree with urbanite's car-centric view - many (if not most) central London dwellers don't have cars and certainly don't do their food shopping by car.

(Again, I am talking in the abstract here, not about Empire Square in particular)

It's not a huge store, but it's at least three times bigger than the Local format shops.

As urbanite has said, they marketted the site to death to all the major supermarkets, and none wanted to install a large store.
