      <description><![CDATA[I refuse to use them.  The other day, in M&amp;S at the Blue Fin, there was one employee behind a checkout till, and another employee walking along the line of customers and telling them that they could use the self service checkouts.<br />
<br />
General amusement in the queue when someone pointed out to the second employee that they understood very well how the self service tills work, but what they'd really like would be if that employee could go and serve behind one of the empty tills, rather than telling people that they should use the self service ones instead.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[After a short holiday I returned and found that the Tesco in Borough Road that had excellent real people serving has converted to mostly self service tills. This morning as no less than two members of staff struggled with an &quot;unexpected items in the bagging area&quot; or whatever I asked when someone would serve me. They pointed to another self-service till at which point I dropped the basket (oh whoops about that bottle) and sugested that if they wanted to offer me a discount for serving myself then I might be interested, but for the moment I'll go somewhere else.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[In the Sainsburys today I tried to use self service and it took forever to scan and finally wanted a member of staff when none were around (they always want a member of staff, I think there is something wrong with the scales).<br />

I put my food back in the basket and went and queued, was out in about 90seconds. Grrrrrr, stupid system! Nice jammy dodgers though.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[I did use the ones before sometimes, as you could have your basket on one side and pack your (own) bag on the other side. But these new ones now are much narrower, you put your basket underneath and there is a tiny area where you then have to put your shopping.. so fiddly if you have more than three items! yes, will be queuing for the tills in the future. But weird that they should respond to the arrival of Sainsbury's with reduced service! I think it is not a very well run Tesco's anyway, the manager is a miserable man!]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[I've found in the Great Suffolk Street store, as with M&amp;S on Southwark Street, that if you ask for a till to be opened they're (usually) happy to oblige.<br />
<br />
For some reason, the self-service tills at the Tesco metro spend more time saying 'assistance needed' than they spend working properly. So my advice is, if you want to buy more than a handful of items, insist on a member of staff serving you.]]></description>

I actually dislike self service as I find it takes longer than a staffed till, particularly for loose items like rolls, as it takes so long to find the item. Sadly, round here it's hard to vote with our feet.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Aghh, now Tesco in Great Suffolk Street has gone almost completely self service. I think there is only one manned till left now. And the self service tills are much smaller than before, with minimal space to put your stuff and next to impossible to use with your own bag now. Annoying, but probably that suits most people who only want to buy a sandwich or a chocolate bar..]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Probably a fairly self-evident point to make, but  it's consumers, not supermarkets, who decide how we want to shop and, by extension, what kind of outlets get opened. <br />
<br />
Admittedly, the picture's complicated by consumers' decision-making being affected by habit underpinned by heavily-marketed concepts like 'convenience'. But ultimately the choice is ours.  And in the big picture the market follows the money.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Me too...but supermarkets don't and they are the ones who decide on opening or not....and they have decided quite defintely that a potential store of this size will not be viable without customers having the option to do large scale shopping and needing a car to make that happen. Such a shame that a site like this is just going to waste...even the change of use to incorporate office premesis hasn't resulted in much interest.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Don't get me wrong - I haven't expressed any view on the merits or otherwise of Empire Square as a supermarket location.<br />
<br />
I just disagreed with se1lurker's claim that the supermarket groups don't want to have anything  bigger than Tesco Express/Sainsbury's Local in central London as it's clearly not the case.<br />
<br />
I also disagree with urbanite's car-centric view - many (if not most) central London dwellers  don't have cars and certainly don't do their food shopping by car.<br />
<br />
(Again, I am talking in the abstract here, not about Empire Square in particular)<br />
<br />
Even if the chains are not currently geared up for medium-to-large format stores that are not car-centric, it's about time they were - the notion of lots of people driving to supermarkets in central London is insane on so many levels.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[i believe Waitrose were originally the most interested in Tabard (now Empire) square. the council stopped it as they wouldn't allow customer parking spaces. so now we have an empty space employing no-one, totally unproductive. to me its the council who are to blame for this missed opportunity and we end up with half a dozen identikit small Tesbury's all inadequately stocked. btw whatever happened to the planned redevelopment of tesco on OKR?]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The site has been empty for years.....no supermarket wanted then or now....the economic climate is not why its empty...its empty because there's no parking and any planner and developer should have anticipated that. It needs parking to work...comparing it with the Tesco Metros as James has done is just not a viable argument for this site...those 2 have huge numbers of people passing constantly all day...the footfall is very very different. In size and relative location this site is more comparable to Waitrose at St Thomas Moore Square and that has parking and probably works...just!]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[se1lurker - the Sainsbury's Central I was referring to is the one opposite Holborn tube station, at the corner of Kingsway.<br />

It's not a huge store, but it's at least three times bigger than the Local format shops.<br />
<br />
The Sainsbury's Local at their HQ at Holborn Circus is a bog standard store and no bigger than any of the others.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[On your post James, I dont really think Sainsbury Holborn is a fair comparison here. Its a slightly bigger store because its under their head office! And to be honest it isnt much bigger than Sainsbury on BHS.<br />

I don't know the Cheapside store you mention.<br />

If Tesco/Waitrose/Sainsbury don't want to open a large store in Borough (especially the Empire Square site being offered to them) then c'est la vie, but I don't think the Council are to blame for it.]]></description>

As urbanite has said, they marketted the site to death to all the major supermarkets, and none wanted to install a large store. The reality is the supermarket chains only want to put &quot;Locals&quot; or &quot;Expresses&quot; within central London.]]></description>
