Maybe when the Shard is done the situation will change and there will be more people.
In fact I have an apparently "unrelated" question regarding London Bridge station.

It seems to me that there is a quite high number of serious assoults during the year. Posted on this web regularly.
Anybody has statistics or comparisons with the general situation in London? Is it a hot station for it?
Thank you.

I assume that the red trusses will soon go and that the nightime lighting is only temporary and will be significantly better when its completed. If not then at night it will not look much different to what it did before!!
Actually for a few months this new entrance may look quite nice however I have a feeling the feelgood factor might be short lived as the construction work commences on all sides for the new station! Once the new station is complete only around 30- 40% of the passengers will use this way out as it will essentially become the bus station/ taxi entrance and the route for a proportion of the terminus passengers heading for the City. The majority of the passengers will be emerging in Tooley and St Thomas Street or heading along the ground level mall to the Underground Station. This concourse may end up nearly as empty as these sunday evening shots most of the time?!

On visiting the exhibition I was told that the St Thomas's street solution with the fake brick arches and the station not being very evident was driven by Southwark planning officers rather than the designers. Earlier designs by the previous architect had a much more open elevation to the station on this side as well as on the Tooley street side, treating both ends of the concourse equally which is how it should be.If this is the case it will be important when the scheme is submitted to planning if not before to let Southwark as well as Network Rail/Tfl know the strength of feeling that the south end of the station should not be allowed to become the poor relation and needs equal emphasis. It is crucial to the regeneration of the area south of the railway to encourage the renewal of St Thomas Street (in particular the retained original arches)between the new station entrance and Bermondsey Street. Any readers from Southwark Council or GLA please note you will only get one chance to make this work.

Yesterday briefing was extremely interesting. Thank you Russell.

There was a person who raised the point that I wrote on the very previous post, about the solution for St Thomas's street

Could this person contact me as I think we should make sure that this part of the plan is modified.

Putting storages on St Thomas's street is really a dead sentence for that street. And in contrast with what the TFL adviser tried to tell us: that TFL wish to balance the benefits for Tooley and St thomas's street. If high rise building will be built there on the other side, there will be nothing to attract anybody to stop by in that road. And this lack of life will be next door to the Shangri-laa entrance on one hand and Bermondsey Street on the other...

What an odd solution!!

I was actually happy to see how many people agreed on that. Not last a very elegant woman who remarked this point in a very clear fashion. Hope she can read as well this post and we can all start together to push TFL to modify their vision for St Thomas's street.

Hi Regenerate I was ther for 30 minutese.

Most people were questioning on and on the whole design.. in the sense that they thought it was not good enough and it does not protect the listed stuff in the actual station..
I am not an architect but I think that everything is a big improvement to the badly run down station we have a the time.

I agree with you. I had the same feeling. The retail and benefit for the local community is very scarse.
They told me about fast food and offices. It killed my enthusiasm at once.. Again surrounded by fast food and offices... Like BHS doesn’t showcase enough of that c..p.

The design on Tooley street is very bad also.. these are all back windows belonging to inside offices (TFL?). This will create a separation between LB and Bermondsey street as it will stand as a dead section of the street. I think Bermondsey street will suffer for that. No entrances no shops no windows.. just back of offices.

I thought that was a real joke. You have the shard with luxury hotel, tourists, and most of all.. us locals, and what you do? You put burger kings and off licence. I found this outrageous.

Are you part of a group to make something to correct the project?

Has anyone been to the exhibition on the station? what did you think?
Questions that did not seem to have answers and were -
Why is there so much less space for the public than in the last planning consent? Most of the space seems to be beyond the ticket barrier line and the public route is focussed into the brick tunnel of Stainer Street. Nice new space for the passengers, old brick tunnel for the local pedestrians. Why is there so much less retail than in the previous planning consented scheme. It now seems we are only to get snack bars and coffee shops and the usual station tat rather than the supermarket and high street stores that the original scheme promised.
Why is there no roof over the platforms? It seems such a small addition in the grand scheme of things to join the canopies together and get good passenger protection from the weather rather than simply replicating the current situation but with prettier canopies.
I cannot make the meeting at Globe House tonight but maybe someone could raise these issues with Mr Drabble as I do not see why when they come to apply for planning permission we should accept something that does less for locals, or indeed commuters, than the scheme they already have consent for.
As for the facades issue my vote goes to having something new and confident and expressive of what the station is.
To hide a new space "the size of Wembley" (they keep repeating this as if size alone is a virtue)behind a bunch of fake brick arches and columns when all the brick vaults behind have been removed is plain daft.

I could not agree more!

And in this case what is needed the most is some open space outside the station entrance! Whilst I do like the South Eastern Railway Building, in this case, I think its a sacrifice worth making to avoid the chaos that exists outside the current station entrance next to the London Dungeon.

This is by far the most significant development on the agenda for the area. It has implications for the character of the Bermondsey Village area that are more far-reaching even than those of the Shard. They include important traffic management and heritage issues that will have a profound effect on the character of Tooley St, St Thomas St and a large area south of St Thomas St, including the Bermondsey Street Conservation area.
All welcome
Think the roof has to come down to get the extra through tracks in that make thameslink work and get rid of the long waiting times for thameslink services trying to share tracks with charing cross services. But if it is a given that the roof has to go to make the improved services work, could Southwark planners not have insisted on a new roof. Perhaps over the whole station to make the conditions on the through track platforms a little more humane. St Pancras does not have to put up with just canopies and windy wet platforms although admittedly at St Pancras we we have to provide for the French with their higher expectations!!??
Indeed, the retaining wall for the original (terminating) platforms is to be demolished to make way for the new platforms, so that roof has to come down one way or another (and it's not particularly special).

On the other hand, the not particularly special Arch 4 at Paddington looks stunning now and they were planning to demolish that a few years ago.

The new canopy looks nice, but yes, a roof would be more fitting for a mainline terminus. This is very discreet - not much of an announcement, quite 1950's in a way, which I like, but it's seems to lack the "LOOK! I'm A Railway Station" effect that seems appropriate.
