I'm certainly not advocating rudeness (I've never been to Patisserie Lila and on the back of these reviews have no intention whatsoever of doing so), but surely the proprietor doesn't have to be nice to her customers if she doesn't want to be?

Seems a strange business plan granted, but I think she should be entitled to carry on her business as she sees fit (provided there is no discrimination, and seeing how many people have experienced her it sounds like there is not!).

I think people should vote with their feet, rather than making any sort of "official complaint" about things like this. I would hope the authorities have more pressing matters to deal with...

Another day, another case of classic treatment at Lila's.

I've been here before and experienced the 'having to leave because not ordering food' even though I was sitting with people that were. But I thought I'd give Lila's another go last week. I went in on a wednesday morning with my friend and her baby. There was no one in Lila's except for a small table at the front with a couple of teenage boys. My friend put her baby buggy to one side of the cafe and the staff came over straight away to ask her to move it. She asked where she could park it (bearing in mind there was masses of space and no one in) and Lila (must have been her - surly, spitting, ridiculously aggressive) barked that it was a health and safety hazard. My friend offered to pack it up, move it where ever and Lila had none of it and just yelled at us to go!!!

I shouted back that I wouldn't be darkening her door again. We left, went round the corner to the lovely Italian cafe who were more than happy to have us.

How on earth does this cafe survive? This woman is like a baddie from a B&W film she is so nasty.

For what it's worth, any patisserie in London is in my experience a place where you have to have a pastry and/or subject yourself to rude service.

Maison Bertaux in Soho is delightful but even there the folk can be on the abrupt side of 'cute', and you have to order a cake (which are very good).

Don't get me started on Valeries'.

When did anyone say tourists deserve attitude and arrogance from locals?

I am guessing it works for Lila because tourists generally go to a place once. If they are in London for a few days and go to Patisserie Lila and have a bad time, then what? They probably won't go back in any case, and they don't know about this site to complain about it, so they chalk it up as one bad experience. Evidently she has a big enough flow of tourists that she doesn't care about alienating the locals. That may backfire on her eventually, the way things are going.

None of that excuses the complaints, though I wonder mildly why people continue to post new complaints when they are all consistent with the previous eight pages' worth.

since when has "tourists deserve attitude and arrogance from locals" become the catchphrase of this city? does the fact that LIla caters for tourists excuse all the complaints on here about it. when abroad, as a tourist, i expect to meet friendly locals who dont rip me off and provide service with some kind of a smile. its kind of normal isnt it??

Tourists.
Every place I go at Borough the stall holders have got to know me and are always pleased to see me and are nice and chat to me even though I don't spend a lot of money.

Lila only only caters to tourists and I guess it works for her as tourists want takeaway and regulars want ingredients. It's tough for the majority of stall holders at Borough who sell ingredients rather than fast food, and the regular shoppers who have to wade through the tourist hordes to buy butter, and noticeable that many stall holders have to offer fast food as well now to make it pay.
it's about choice and what service you experience.
Not quite. The range of choice does not automatically make the experience a good one. It is the [relatively] limited choice of good coffees, made with care, the style of service, and the place itself that define Monmouth as different from the rest. People who don't rate that, or want a mochachino or hot chocolate have plenty of other options locally.
