37 has a very bad reputation. But you may wish to know they have finally got rid of a few bad apples..... Especially the gym floor manager (about time) and the studio coordinator who was disliked by staff, members and instructors alike. With the gym floor manager leaving (jumped more like) you will find a new attitude from staff. You will also find the evenings on the gym floor and classes not as busy as all the cash for memberships have been stopped so will no longer be attending. With the studio coordinator leaving you will find the level of instructors will improve as many who left because of her attitude have all been waiting to return once shed been removed. I for one am not a fan of 37 but with the new over all manager coming in and making these changes so soon you know the level of service all round will improve. One strange aspect to the changes as 37 is that the former over all manager Simon was moved to the 37 Olympia branch but as he was a major reason for tower bridges short coming you would have thought they wouldn't let him have another go at bringing the other branch down? especially as he backed the two above even with staff in tears complaining about them.......
For someon who is 'not a fan of 37', you sure do know a lot about what goes on there!

Not to discount or challenge the bad experiences others have had, but I found 37 degrees to be very amenable and straight-forward in my dealings with them.

When I decided to leave I just popped over an email to the staff-member who deals with cancellations (Shakti, I think?) and it was processed without any fuss.

I may have just been fortunate, but I found that Mark Ocampo was very friendly and helpful. I can't speak for his colleagues, as I've never had any dealings with them (except JJ, in passing).

It's a decent gym, but pricey ... worth considering if you have corporate discount and work in ML. Usually, they also have a rolling one-month notice period, so you're not locked in for too long, and can freeze your membership for £10 a month if you go on secondment or long-term projects outside of London.

mcazals, they're very relaxed when you call to cancel and don't tell you that it needs to be in writing even though they know that this is a strict requirement included in the small print of your original contract. So when you think it's cancelled, it isn't and the letters, abusive phone calls and threats start, escalating to soliicitor's letters. They have a formula and obviously know that there is a point at which most people cannot take the hassle of standing up to them and cave in and pay. Maybe it's good for the bottom line but it does huge damage to their reputation and seems to me counter-productive in the longer term but maybe I am being naive and they can get away with it as most of their peers behave in this way.

You may well be in for a long fight - have you got any record of the call or who you spoke to? Oliver's advice above is worth following. They are prepared to go to court so be ready for this if you can face it. I don't know whether anyone like Trading Standards or a consumer organisation can help? It's all a lot of trouble though and they know this!

Even more annoyingly you will probably, like me, continue to receive a barrage of emails and texts inviting you to sign up as a member.

I joined 37 Degrees to train for a marathon - along with two others - we were offered a special deal as we were raising money for a local charity. 37 Degrees didn't keep to any of the terms of the deal which involved a partial rebate of membership fees. They refused to honour the terms even though they were in writing and one of our group had to taken them to court to get the money back.

Despite their attitude, two of us kept our membership going as we hoped to keep up our training. Of course, we didn't and having not visited the gym at all for at least nine months and finding we could no longer afford the fees (which go up without notice incidentally), we gave a month's notice. Because it was not an exact calendar month as per their terms, we were told we would have to pay an additional month's membership.

We are now subject to very aggressive bullying tactics from their credit management company Arc - receving both letters and threatening phone calls.

The gym facilities are good and the pool area is very nice but watch out for:

- offers, particularly at this time of year
- pushy sales staff who may well no longer be employed by the time you have a query or complaint about the too good to be true offer you were given
- classes which are constantly overbooked and staff who promise to review the schedule and do something about it, my personal experience was that they did nothing
- unfair contract terms
- utter disregard for customers unless you're signing up for membership

These gyms have gone downhill since they opened!!!! Terrible management - including rude receptionists who don't know what they are doing, and any attempts to email, phone or speak to a Manager (Membership, Marketing, Operations) are ignored. The evening and weekend class schedule is crap. After being a member (full paying not Corporate subsidised) at the Olympia gym for 4 years; they still send me text messages asking me to join; and recent attempts to discuss the need for evening and weekend classes were ignored. I simply could not get through to anyone. First, an email I sent via their website was ignored. A followup call led to being a first name (no surnames, job titles or contact details provided). A second call resulted in being told no one of that name worked there and that I should come in person and speak to "A Manager". So I went in, was told I could not speak to anyone; but I stood there until I could, eventually the Operations Manager met with me; she was friendly but clearly could"t care less. She fobbed off the query to the Class Scheduler who was not in. I was told I could not contact the Membership Manager, Class Scheduler and there was no Marketing Manager. Basically, there was no one I could speak to. The woman then took a scrap of paper on which to write my phone number and first name on to leave a message ... for someone!? I then asked if they had a printout of the new timetable. The answer was No. That was from the Operations Manager.

The management at 37 Degrees are basically bullies. And, as with all bullies, you have to stand up to them.

They are claiming I owe them 2 months' membership fees, because they failed to process the cancellation I sent them via email. They got their credit management company, ARC, to send me threatening letters. The gym's staff were confrontational, aggressive and physically threatening when I complained in person.

My advice to the many other people in this forum who have experienced something similar:

- Document all your dealings with them.
- If they get ARC on to you, contest the charge and refuse to pay.
- Do not take any notice of threats from either ARC or 37 Degrees that it will "affect your credit rating". This is not true. Their charges have no relevance to your credit rating unless they pursue the case in the County Court, win the case and you subsequently refuse to pay.
- If they bring their claim before the County Court, you will have an opportunity to argue your case, have every chance of winning and 37 Degrees will incur expense and hassle in bringing the charge.
- Warn everyone you know about this company. If, like me, you work in one of the big firms at More London with corporate membership arrangements, let your HR Department know of their bullying. Also, warn any new colleagues against signing up. Even, if you dissuade only one or two people from joining this gym, the cumulative financial impact on the company of lots of people doing this will be considerable.

I fail to understand how a company can be so short-sighted and so indifferent to its brand reputation.

37 degrees has to have the worst customer service in London. After I cancelled my membership due to heavy work commitments, they hounded me with phone calls demanding money, even though I had informed them of my cancellation via email well after my "lock-in" period. They then got a credit management agency to threaten me with legal action, despite the fact it was their mistake for not processing my cancellation. They have been aggressive and rude throughout the process. Steer clear of this outfit at all costs. They are cowboys.

I went to look round the gym two weeks ago mainly as soho doesnt have a swimming pool. They fitted in my appointment quickly but when I handed over my details I toldthem specifically I didnt want it to be used for marketing and I reiterated it when I went there.

I was shown around the gym by a very enthasusiatic chap and he took me to see the pool. I said it looked like a dungeon/multi storey car park and I really wouldnt feel safe using it as it felt very cut off form the rest of the premises. THe guy tried to talk me round then I said look Im wasting your and my time - Im not interested.

Then we went upstairs and he said "so lets talk about payment options" and I said look im not interested. He still wouldnt let go.

Ihave since had 4!!! marketing texts sent to me on my mobile since my visit and Ive called them twice to be taken off their system. They are a nightmare so lord knows what they would be like to deal with if I was member and having to pay £80 a month!

You dont go to tescos and buy a tv for £200 and then a month or so later your friend buys the same one for £150 and then ask for your money back do you? So why is a gym different.
